Excerpt:

Ross gave in without making a fuss, but she thought his mouth tightened at his mother’s blatant interference. He saw Christy to the door and she was aware that he watched for a while as she made her way down the path before the door closed, cutting off the glimmer of light.

The almost full moon partly illuminated the path which was barely lit with one or two dim lampposts, so the trees appeared less menacing. One small stretch of shadow loomed near the end, and she was beginning to relax when she heard a sound behind her. Thinking Ross might have followed discreetly after all, she half turned.

Next minute, the ground was rising to meet her. Someone had given her a hard push. Frightened now, Christy waited for another blow. Instead, she heard the distinct sound of footsteps running off into the night but couldn’t make out anything more definite.

Shaken, but able to hobble the rest of the way to the cottage, she unlocked the door with trembling fingers, making sure no one was near. She thought of going back up to the house but couldn’t face the questions. Besides, she’d caused enough drama for one night. She locked the door behind her and quickly made sure everything else was secure.

Then she went straight upstairs. Tiredness, delayed grief, fear and confusion combined to make any further decisions impossible. She couldn’t even be bothered to make a cup of tea.

Eventually snuggling between the cool cotton sheets and cosy old-fashioned blankets, she tried unsuccessfully to blank out her thoughts. Why on earth would anyone do such a thing to her in this small place? Maybe it was a random thief. Then she remembered the sound had come from the direction of the big house. As though someone had followed and waited until the shadows to strike. But that didn’t make sense.

As sleep gradually took over, Christy had to the face the horrible thought that perhaps someone didn’t want her back in the cottage, or in Kilcraig.
