Book Blurb:
(From the pages of 'Legends of Windemere')
As Windemere moves forward, a broken spirit falls into the shadows.
Two years have passed since Luke Callindor was lost during the champions’ battle against Baron Kernaghan. Many mourn the loss, but none have been hurt more than the fiancée he left behind, Kira Grasdon. Plagued by grief and determined to prove he is alive, she has sacrificed her business, her reputation, and her hope. Surviving on the streets of Gaia, she has become an emotional husk of her former self. It is only by chance that Kira crosses paths with an old friend and learns of a path, which will either end her suffering or revive her shattered soul. As the rumors state, hundreds of adventurers have flocked to Lacarsis and none have returned.
Will Kira meet her death in the City of Evil or will she thrive among the monsters?
My Review:
It’s been two years since Luke Callindor’s death and there isn’t a minute that goes by where Kira wishes she, too, was dead. Life without Luke isn’t worth living but Kira continues to breathe. She’s a shell of her former self, hating her friends and those who knew her when Luke was alive. Kira has a chance meeting with an old friend and learns there might be a way to escape this endless torment she’s in.
Lacarsis, known as the City of Evil, is a place where many have flocked to but none escape alive. Death is better than her current status, so Kira enters Larcarsis. In a gladiator-style battle to the death arena, Kira pits herself against monsters, warriors and other magical beings. Kira’s experience defeating the Baron comes in handy. The Shadow Earl takes a special liking to her and names her his pet. The more she fights, the more life pulses in her veins. But when someone betrays her, she must decide whether her desire to live is stronger than her desire to die.
I’ve read all the Legends of Windemere books and I was curious to see how Yallowitz would spin-off the series. Kira has been one of my favorite characters and this is her story. The pages bleed with her despair and I couldn’t stop reading once she got to Lacarsis. The beginning set the scene for what’s to come, feeding the reader vital information a little bit at a time. The ending surprised me and left it open for a sequel.
If you’re looking for an adventurous fantasy, you won’t be disappointed with this book. Filled with great action scenes, impressive weapons and a few plot twists I didn’t see coming. Highly recommend!
Favorite Character/Quote: “You are conflicted. There is a desire to die and another to survive, which drives you forward. I want to see which one will win in the end.”

Author Biography:
Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. Truthfully, his tales of adventure are much more interesting than his real life, so skip the bio and dive into the action.
