If you pay attention to the world, it's an amazing place. If you don't, it's whatever you think it is. ~ Reggie Watts
Are you paying attention to the world around you? If not, you're missing out.
I see a lot of people going through their day without noticing what's going on around them. They're glued to their device and they don't see what's right in front of them. Danger could be nipping at their heels and they'd miss the signs until it was too late to stop it.
When I was fourteen, I was babysitting two siblings, age nine and four. I had set up the nine-year-old girl in front of the television watching a movie (Little Mermaid, if memory serves me right) and went out to the kitchen to start making dinner. I had just put the heat on the skillet and was frying up some ground beef when the four-year-old boy screamed my name. I went running into his bedroom to find out what was wrong.
Once the crisis was averted, I walked back into the kitchen to to find the kitchen and living room filled with smoke. The skillet was on fire and the smoke detector started going off. I calmly put out the fire and went to the living room to open the screen door to air out the apartment. My mouth dropped open as the young girl watched the movie without noticing the smoke or the smoke alarm going off. I shook her and asked if she was okay.
"Why wouldn't I be? I'm watching my favorite movie," she replied. It was then she noticed the smoke. "Why is there smoke?"
I'll never forget that moment. I couldn't believe she was so absorbed in her movie that she didn't pay attention to what was going on around her.
It's easy to get distracted with all you have going on in your day-to-day life but please be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to what's going on around you. If you aren't careful, you'll miss out on the beauty all around you.
Put down your device for a moment and just look around. Gaze into the sky and relish the warmth of the sun. Hear the birds chirping and watch the leaves turn color before falling to the ground.
