My Review:
Sometimes confronting your fears brings surprising new beginnings.
Kelly Steele has a phobia about small towns. But it’s justified. As a teenager, she was subjected to an illegal strip search on her first evening in one. Now, seventeen years later, she’s headed for another rural community. It’s a job that will look good on her resume and propel her career. She’s determined to put the past behind her.
She arrives to find the rookie cop who performed the illegal strip search is her new supervisor. The past has just crashed headlong into the present.
The topic of this book is sensitive, to say the least. But the author handles it with dignity, empathy, and humor.
The author excels at digging beneath the surface of her characters and discovering their drive, fears, and compassion. Jennifer Raines has the insightful gift of understanding human nature. She captures the essence of every person in this book and showed the reader their true colors.
I felt as if I knew Kelly personally. Despite wanting to hate Mick for everything he’d done, I found myself sympathetic to his circumstances. He had tried to make amends for his actions and paid a price.
This slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers romance came with undeniable chemistry and many seemingly insurmountable road bumps. Kelly and Mick must overcome their uniquely shared history, not only to heal themselves, but to be effective advocates for a greater purpose.
I highly recommend this well-written, thoughtful, and compelling story.
