Title: A Midwife for Sweetwater / New Face in Town
Author: Susan Payne
Genre: Historical Western Women’s Fiction
Book Blurb:
A woman dedicated to bringing new life into the world finds love from a man she thought would never look at her in that way.
Excerpt:
She stood, one bag at her feet, trying to decide the best route to take, when four of the largest men she had ever seen came toward her, each one appearing larger than the man in front of him. The first one to reach her side put out his big paw of a hand, engulfing hers within it and shook it with friendly enthusiasm.
“Mrs. Johansen?” At her nod, he continued, “I’m Ben Greggs, and this here is Seth Harrison and Mac and James Macgregor.” The other men tipped their hats and mumbled a welcome while Ben kept hold of her hand. Mr. Gregg finally realized what he was doing and laughed at himself while trying to explain.
“We are glad you could come so quickly. Our wives will probably be your first, um, patients. We put the advertisement in the newspaper and you caught our eye right off. Young enough not to retire and leave us and a fine-looking list of references that all proved to think very highly of you. We feel very lucky to have you here in Sweetwater.”
“Do you all have wives who are expecting?” she asked, faintly amazed.
“Mine and Seth’s wives are about ready to burst.” Then he turned questioning eyes to Mac and James who looked at each other shrugging.
James cleared his throat saying, “Not yet.”
Ben went on, “Well, they are practically newlyweds. Seth and I have been married almost a year.” As if that explained it all. Evidently, these men didn’t waste any time in starting their families. If there is a big population of young families as the advertisement intimated, there will be plenty of births to keep Rebecca busy.
