I said, “You mean Warren was . . .”
“Murdered,” O’Connor said.
“Why are you telling me this?”
“I need your help. I’m relatively new to the area. Fairway to Heaven is like a village. You know these people.”
“So, I’m like an undercover agent?”
Riley grinned and extended his right hand. “We got a deal?”
I slipped my hand in his, surprised by the little tingle spiraling through my body, reaching parts I assumed were long dead from lack of use.
With a firm shake of his hand, I said, “Yeah, we got a deal.”
Still holding my hand, he leaned close. “When are you going to say yes?”
I tugged my hand from his. “To what?”
He flashed a smile. “Dinner. Just dinner.”
I pointed at the ring on his left hand. “You’re married.”
O’Connor heaved a sigh. “I was married when I worked in southern California. We split, but I kept my ring. When I came to Vista Valley, one of the commissioners said, ‘Boy, you’re fresh meat for all the single ladies in Vista Valley. If I were you, I’d keep the ring. Make up a good story. Tell ‘em your wife’s in a coma or ran off and joined a commune. So, I took his advice”
I fought a grin. “I’ve heard those stories.”
When I glanced down at my naked ring finger, I felt a twinge of guilt. It was a good thing he didn’t know my secret.
