Excerpt:
The forest hummed with magical energy as they entered a clearing.
The witch pointed to a small log cabin. “Welcome to my humble abode. Come, I’ll warm some hearty soup in my cauldron while you sew the slashes in your coat.”
“I don’t need a coat. Thanks to your witchcraft, I can’t feel the cold anymore.”
“Aye, but you need to cover that old jerkin and blend into your surroundings. The humans will be wearing coats.”
“I’ll return home first for a fresh change of clothes.”
“Only if you wish to risk murdering your family. Avenging angels do not waver in their rage. Your temper, as you’ve probably noticed, is impossible to control. Especially for an angel in her infancy.”
“Ahhhhh!” Maya clenched her fists. “I hate you! I hope you’re cursed to burn in Hell the way you’ve cursed me!”
“Aye. I am.” The witch’s voice stayed frustratingly calm and matter of fact. “Don’t you see how lucky you are? You’ve been given immortal life and a chance to take vengeance upon a murderer.”
“So, what am I? Vampire? Zombie?”
“Neither. An avenging angel doesn’t need to drink blood or wander the earth, killing in a mindless stupor. You’re a murderous vigilante.”
Memories of who she used to be flooded her¾laughing with her mother, resting her cheek against Millie’s head, and bringing new life to the world, growing plants from seed. “Will I ever love again? Or will I always be angry?”
The witch cackled. “Goodness, no. Why would you want to? I’ve walked this Earth for three hundred years, girl. The heartbreak isn’t worth the trouble.”
Her words fed into Maya’s rage. The life she’d known¾gone. And if the witch had told the truth, gone forever, because Maya would be forced to live until the end of time with memories of a past life that were emotionally inaccessible.
The two responsible would suffer. First, Rand Roosevelt, and then she’d find a way to end the witch. Never again would another murder victim be forced into slavery, robbed of the white light.
