Dr. Alena Nichols believes love is forever--until she suffers a stroke and her fiancé disappears without a word. Devastated, she wants nothing more than to be left alone, but when her ex skipped out, he left something behind that his partner desperately wants.

Treasury Agent Sam McCullen came to the east coast for one reason: retrieve the memory card that Alena’s fiancé stole. Looking for answers, Sam infiltrates the beautiful doctor’s life, becoming her friend and protector. Scarred from a nasty divorce, Sam never wanted another relationship, but getting close to Alena makes him rethink everything.

With danger closing in, they follow clues that only Alena can decipher. But can they learn to look beyond the past and trust in love again?

Excerpt:

With lightning speed, Odessa’s arm slipped around Alena’s neck, lifting her off the seat and pinning the chair between them. Cold metal pressed against her temple.

Uh-oh.

Two men charged into the room, weapons drawn.

One man was Sam, looking angry as hell. “Let her go, Odessa. You’re finished!”

“Like hell! You have to let me out of here, or I’ll put a bullet through her head!”

Was this how she was destined to die? Survive a stroke but die from a bullet to her brain? She struggled. Odessa’s arm tightened around her throat.

“Stay still, sweetie. You do as you’re told, and you’ll stay alive. You’re my insurance policy.”

“Put down the gun. It’s over.”

Odessa’s arm stiffened. Alena sensed the anger in that arm. A man playing an equally cunning game fooled the bitch. Oh, dear. To hell with the bullet in her brain. Odessa was choking her to death! Johnny, why did you do this to me? Wasn’t my stroke enough?

Alena struggled to draw air into her lungs. She tried to kick her way out of the chair, but Odessa had the strength of a bull elephant. Now what?

“You hurt her, and I will shoot you dead, Odessa.”

They were excellent marksmen, right? Professionals go through extensive training. They couldn’t possibly miss Odessa and kill her instead.

Odessa’s gun hand twitched. The trigger inched back. And then consciousness slipped away.
