Trapped. What could be a worse feeling than that? After 18-year-old Sam gets an invitation for a free vacation in the mail, she hops on the opportunity despite her mother's pleas not to go. With the realization that her best friends have all been invited as well, she's sure she made the right choice. Once they board the fancy cruise ship however, things aren't as luxurious as they had seemed. Passengers start to disappear and once the ship lands on a deserted island, Sam and her friends are left on their own to figure out why. Faced with a deadly predicament, they have to learn to survive amid a mass of nightmare creatures all out for the taste of her blood. With the help of a handsome yet suspicious island native, Sam must figure out how to get back to the mainland before she's trapped on the island forever.
Excerpt:
Sam ran the soggy mop over the splotch of dirt on the living room floor for what felt like the hundredth time, and yet it remained, mocking her. She kicked at it, scuffing the floor with the toe of her tennis shoe, and frowned at the unsuccessful attempt. With a loud sigh, she wiped the back of her hand on her forehead. If there was one thing she hated, it was chores, especially on the weekend. She could think of a hundred other things she’d rather be doing than mopping the house at one thirty in the afternoon on a Sunday, but there was no arguing that topic anymore.
She never won anyway.
Sam twisted the knob on the boombox, blasting her music to near deafening levels. The television was on too, but she couldn’t hear it. She glanced toward the huge lurking shape on the other side of the room. Her mother, Delilah, had left it on the news, some broadcast of an island in the Atlantic.
Sam hmphed and swung her mop around, pretending the top was a microphone as she screamed the lyrics of the song at the top of her lungs. She almost knocked over the bucket of mop water but caught herself at the last minute, laughing, glad no one had seen her embarrassing display. With another frown at the stubborn dirt stain, she pulled the mop bucket toward a section of the floor she was yet to work on and made sure she kept her back to her failure.
Out of sight, out of mind.
She barely heard the knocking when it came, a soft tapping that easily could’ve been lost to her blasting music if she hadn’t already been so close to the door. Sam groaned at the sound, ready to throw the mop to the floor and shout “To Hell with this!” at the top of her lungs. Instead, she repressed the urge and carefully leaned it against the wall as the knock sounded again. She composed herself before she answered the door.
Their mailman, Mannequin Bill—as Sam liked to call him—stood on the porch, wearing his usual empty expression. “Special letter for you,” he said and nearly threw the envelope at Sam.
“Yeah, thanks a lot.” She scoffed and slammed the door in his face.
Without his prying eyes, she held the envelope to her face, studying it for some clue as to where it had come from or who had sent it. All the envelope revealed was her name and address.
“What is this?” she asked, scrunching her nose at the mental battle of whether or not to actually open it.
Shaking it next to her ear gave no to clue as to its contents, so by process of elimination, she was reduced to tearing open the envelope. A slip of paper sat inside, and when Sam pulled it out, a silver strip fluttered to the floor.
