Title: Blood Wisp

Author: Sarina Langer

Voice Actors: Adriene Arce

Genre: YA Dark Fantasy

Book Blurb:

A young woman struggling with her Shadow. A bloodthirsty demon fighting for control. Neither prepared to lose against the other.

The country of Midoka embraces magic, also known as the gift. Its most powerful order of sorcerers, the Mist Women, teach novices at the coven in Maishi Hou, and their graduates serve as expert advisors all over the world. Magic is every Midokan’s undeniable birthright.

Except for Yua. An unwilling resident at the Maishi Hou coven, she can’t call forth the smallest flame.

Her only childhood memory is soaked in blood. The only hint as to who—or what—she is lies in her blackened veins.

But they also hide a shadow thirsting for blood, and even the leading Mist Woman fears it.

All her life, Yua has fought her Shadow…until she meets Aza, who says there’s no darkness without light.

Yua is done being scared of herself, but embracing her Shadow could kill everyone. If she tries, she could lose herself forever….

Or she could answer its whispers and become something new.

My Review:

Story Impressions – In the lands of magic, Yua carries none. Instead, she battles the Shadow within. She’s done hiding but she doesn’t want to lose herself to her Shadow. It’s an impossible choice but once made, Yua will never be the same.

Blood Wisp is an engrossing young adult dark fantasy audiobook I couldn’t stop listening to. The story itself plays out through the narration. The world-building blends with the setting to create a YA dark fantasy worth listening to. Fans of Sarah J. Maas will love this audiobook. I sure did and can’t wait to listen to book two.

Narrator’s overall voice – Adriene’s voice has a personality all her own which she applies to the various character voices. It has a smoothness and lilt I thoroughly enjoyed.

Does the narrator fit the characters? Yes, Adriene fits the characters. I’m impressed at how well she evokes the different characters.

Narrator’s reading style – Adriene has a relaxed reading style but with enough dramatic flair to keep the listener entranced.

Narrator’s impact on reading experience – Adriene has an intrinsic ability to draw a listener/reader in without any effort. The scenes are so well narrated, I had to stop what I was doing to focus on the story.

Narrator’s pacing – Adriene’s pacing is flawless, blending fantasy and coming of age themes with ease.

Audiobook flow – Adriene lets the audiobook develop naturally through the use of dialogue, action, and world-building.

What makes this audiobook unique – Adriene and Sarina partner up to bring readers/listeners an engrossing YA dark fantasy. The plot is full of intrigue which adds to the enjoyment while listening.

Would I recommend this audiobook – YES! One-click this audiobook right now.

Author Biography:

Sarina Langer is a dark fantasy author of both epic and urban paranormal novels. Her characters knew she's queer (demi and pan) and has ADHD before she did (and they didn't say anything to her!). She’s as obsessed with books and stationery now as she was as a child, when she drowned her box of colour pencils in water so they wouldn’t die and scribbled her first stories on corridor walls. (‘A first sign of things to come’, according to her mother. ‘Normal toddler behaviour’, according to Sarina.) In her free time she usually reads one audiobook, one ebook, and one paperback (one for every occasion), plays video games, and obsesses over mythology. She has a weakness for books on writing and pretty words. (Specificity, anyone? Or perhaps nebulous?) Sarina lives with her partner in the south of England.
