5 stars for Burly by Paul Drewitt #fiction #comingofage #yalit #bmx #xgames #bookreview

Title: Burly

Author: Paul Drewitt

Genre: Contemporary Fiction, Coming of Age

Book Blurb:

Burly describes the human condition from a 16-year old’s perspective. What seems like a story about BMX kids quickly turns into a unique tale about what it means to be grown up, and the anxiety that teenagers feel when progressing towards that elusive milestone of becoming an adult. Burly deals with issues such as sexism, body image, friendship, popularity, peer pressure, technology, parental pressure, transition to adulthood and more.

My Review:

A poignant and contemplative coming-of-age book presented in a unique fashion. Before reading this book, I honestly thought Burly was a key ingredient in beef soup! This novel is the coming-of-age story for Australian youth. Creatively set in the near future, the book really talks about the past.

Each reader will be able to get something personal from the journey. This book is the journey. Rarely do I get to the end of a book and say hunh. I will never give spoilers so you must read this book and see what you think.

Fans of BMX biking and racing will love this book. Fans of X Games-style action will simply adore this book. This isn't a tale about The Butcher and Fast Eddie. This is the story of youth gone mad ... for bikes. Never have I ever seen a book with such detail about kids and their BMX fun.

My Rating: 5 stars
