Excerpt:

“Around the corner, she stopped and adjusted her purse strap over her shoulder. “I bet you own a big sweet Lab.” The crowd was light. She didn’t have to shout to be heard.

“Good guess.” He stood next to her. “Did you check my profile online?” His eyes narrowed.

“Absolutely not. I was too busy shopping for a dress.” Even if she found the time, she wouldn’t waste it on something so unreliable. She preferred to form her own opinion. “Who watches the Lab when you’re away?”

“I leave him with my brothers. The kids love Mick. I feel bad when I take him home.” He rubbed an open palm across his jaw. His hand moved across a five- o’clock shadow.

The simple gesture and affection in his voice quickened her heartbeat. “Kids and dogs, oh, my.” She smiled. “My readers would love to meet someone like you.”

“What about you?” He leaned close.

His gaze showed interest, but she wasn’t ready to go there. “Like you, I get my dose of kids when I visit family.” She stepped back.

“And dogs.” He raised a brow. “Or men in uniform? Do you object to all uniforms or only military attire?”

“I definitely prefer big dogs to little ones.” She ignored his second question again and continued walking. She needed more time before she answered the rest of his questions. Wearing the uniform came with rules that were often difficult for family members. “I have nothing but respect for the uniform and the people who wear it. Read the rest of my article, and we’ll talk.” She wanted to hear his opinion of what he had read so far. Unfortunately, a busy street was not the place to continue this conversation. “When you finish, give me a call.” She gave him an opening, an excuse to call her, which was more than she gave most men in uniform. Was her card still in his jacket pocket? If lost…oh well, c’est la vie. She’d like to see him again, but this was in fate’s hands.”
