Title: Cherry Blossom Serendipity

Author: Zelda Benjamin

Genre: Sweet Romance

Book Blurb:

A chance encounter propels dating columnist Lexi Anderson into the spotlight with an invitation to one of D.C.'s most exclusive events. Eager for inspiration for her spring column, she agrees to attend the Pink Tie Dinner with an intriguing older gentleman she met at the Vietnam Memorial.

As the night unfolds, the atmosphere at the dinner is electric, and Navy Commander Steve MacDonald is irresistibly drawn to Lexi. His excitement turns to disappointment when he learns she will be heading back to New York the next morning. Determined to see her again, he devises a plan to reunite during New York’s Fleet Week.

Lexi has always been clear with her readers: she never gets involved with men in uniform. But as the magic of the evening lingers in her mind, she finds herself questioning her rule. When the spellbinding moments fade, will Lexi cling to her dating boundaries, or will she surrender to the undeniable chemistry between them?

Excerpt:

“You’re inviting me to the Pink Tie Dinner?” She clasped her hands in front of her face and held her breath. She just received the most sought-after invitation in D.C. but couldn’t ignore Sam’s dampened smile. This wasn’t the appropriate time to ask why seats to such a popular event were empty. If he wanted her to know the circumstances, he’d tell her when he was ready. “You must know someone else who would love to go. What about one of your sons or grandchildren?”

“Everyone’s busy, except for a grandson who lives in D.C.” He shrugged a shoulder. “I hope he doesn’t wait until the last minute to tell me he’s bringing a date.”

“Oh, my. You are serious.” All the money raised would help the Cherry Blossom Festival remain free to the public. How could she say no?

“Of course I’m serious.” Sam raised a brow. “If you’re worried I’m trying to fix you up with my grandson, don’t be. You’ll be my date.” He laughed. “He’ll contend with me if he’s interested.”

She was happy to see him smile again. His delightful laugh was contagious. “I’m in.” She giggled. She wasn’t so sure he wasn’t trying to set her up. Meeting the good-looking grandson, who might not come with a date, could be a perfect addition to her article. What did she have to lose? He might be as charming as his grandfather. She could think of less appealing ways to spend the evening.”

“If you’re serious about mentioning me in your article, you’ll need a better picture.” Sam glanced at the photo on his phone.

“Don’t worry. Using photos with people is complicated. On the rare occasion a photo is included, I use a professional photographer.” Her recent bestselling book on the history of dating was proof her fans wanted to hear what she had to say, not look at pictures.

“I’m not a pro, but we could still use a better picture.” He glanced at his phone and shook his head. “A different perspective might be interesting.” He stood and led her to the opposite side of the path.

“Give it your best.” She set her phone camera for a selfie, handed it to Sam, and glanced at the screen. In the background, groups gathered by the Reflecting Pool, park rangers directed the crowd, and a handsome naval officer walked purposely in their direction.

“Would you like me to take a picture, Grandpa?” The officer approached and extended a hand.

“You’re early, Steve.” Sam checked his watch.

“Are you bothering the tourists again with your stories?” He winked at Lexi.

Did he just call Sam, Grandpa? “He’s your grandson?” The crooked wink was the first thing about Sam, too.”

“He’s the single grandson,” Sam whispered.

“Your grandfather was no bother at all. He’s delightful.” Confident he wouldn’t grab the cell and run, she handed Steve the phone.

“I’ll get a better photo if you step a little to the side. This angle has too many people in the background.” Steve directed her a few steps to the left with a wave of his hand.

“Don’t mind him. He’s a little bossy sometimes.” Sam stepped closer to Lexi. “Do you see what I mean, less than perfect?”

“No problem.” She glanced toward the camera. “I’ve met a lot of officers. They just have a more efficient way of doing things.” So, this was one of Sam’s good-looking, but less-than-perfect grandsons?

“Grandpa, look at the camera.”

The officer’s voice was strong and commanding. Lexi snapped to attention.”

“How about a smile?” Steve pointed the phone upward. “Do you want the monument and pool in the background?”

“A picture with your grandfather and the cherry blossoms is fine.” She sighed and relaxed. All she wanted was a simple snapshot, not a professional photo. If she included this moment in time in her article, she could refer to the photo. “I’ll photograph the sights later.” She focused on Steve’s sparkling blue eyes and smiled. Sam wasn’t just using his grandfather bragging privilege.

“Got it.” He returned the cell. “What do you think?”

Sam glanced over her shoulder. “Hmm, not bad.”

“It’s better than my selfie.” She scanned the previous photos.

“Excuse my grandfather’s manners.” He extended a hand. “I’m Steve.”

“Sam dismissed the remark with a wave. “This charming young lady you just photographed is Lexi. She’s here on assignment for a magazine.” He offered Steve her card.

Steve glanced at the card and slipped it into the pocket of his uniform jacket.”
