Excerpt:

As the doctor grabbed an instrument off a tray, he

revealed a cage on the counter containing an eight or

nine-inch dragon. Its muted colors indicated it was a

female. He opened the cage door and grabbed the

creature, holding it firmly in his fist. The dragon’s eyes

popped out of the sides of his head as the doctor

squeezed, nearly choking it. Alina jerked back, not

wanting to witness the animal’s pain. But unable to tear

herself away, she watched the projection.

The doctor jabbed a needle into the dragon’s

shoulder and injected it with a serum from a bottle.

After tossing it back into the cage, the mystery doctor

scratched his jowls with a stylus and scribbled notes on

a crystal tablet. He grabbed the vial Ms. Silver handed

him and opened a door to a room. In the adjacent room,

she glimpsed a lab with several long metal tables.

On one table, a white sheet draped over a slight

figure of a corpse. Eerily familiar, the sharp angles of

the shoulders and elbows, the small feet poking up,

revealed it was the size of a thin child. Before the door

swung shut, she glimpsed a microscope and petri dishes

along the counter.

Her rib cage compressed, cutting off her breath as

she remembered Syriah’s fear. They killed Leon, the

little girl had claimed. The article that Aurore showed

her of the mother who leapt to her death, despondent

over her son’s treatment. Ms. Silver offering a new

experiment for Mandin. Smacking her forehead, she

cursed herself. She didn’t need to ask Chance what

happened to Leon, she should have asked Dr. Olek.

After hurrying down the steps, she leapt onto the

hallway floor. Dr. Olek could clear this up for her,

maybe she was jumping to conclusions. After all,

Chance’s mother brought Mandin’s case to Ms. Silver’s

attention. But Alina couldn’t unsee the body. A child’s

body, it had to be.
