After Ardin Wesley's cousin, Suziette, is murdered, her widower, Brett, asks Ardin to help him adopt Suziette's little girl. Trouble is, no one knows the identity of the child's natural father, and Ardin wants to adopt Leonie herself. Although she’s drawn to Brett and attraction blooms as they grow close, an abusive ex-husband turned Ardin against love. Not to mention, Brett feels betrayed once he learns of her plans to adopt the toddler.
Then someone sets fire to Ardin's aunt's house, and she barely escapes with her life. Despite their differences, Brett offers her shelter, and together, they work to create a secure home for the bereft little girl. But they need to discover the identity of her father before someone else dies to protect his terrible secret.
Fans of Karen Rose, Fern Michaels, and Lisa Jackson will enjoy Marilyn Levinson.
Excerpt:
After the funeral, Brett had stopped by Aunt Julia’s to pick up Leonie. The little girl had stayed at her grandmother’s in the care of a babysitter while her mother was being buried. When Aunt Julia told him Leonie would remain with her, Brett had stormed out of the house.
Now he looked totally spent, as if he’d exhausted the last of his resources. When he caught her studying him, he pulled himself upright, then leaned toward her, gripping the edges of the scarred table.
“In case you’re worrying, let me put your mind at rest. I didn’t kill Suziette.”
Ardin nodded, but her gaze fell on Brett’s broad shoulders and muscular arms. Here was a man who’d worked on construction crews every summer through high school and college, and, even now, labored beside his men when they ran behind schedule. She suddenly remembered the black and blue marks on Suziette’s arms, marks Suziette had refused to explain.
Ten days later Suziette was dead, strangled with her own Hermès scarf.
