Title: Dragon of Denmark
Author: Jennifer Ivy Walker
Genre: Viking historical romance/ paranormal epic fantasy
Book Blurb:
Skårde the Scourge, bastard son of the Danish king Harald Bluetooth, is a fierce Viking warlord who earned the prestigious title Dragon of Denmark through victorious battles and lucrative Viking raids. When his royal father announces that Skårde will forge a Viking alliance through an arranged marriage to the daughter of Richard the Fearless, the Dragon of Denmark considers the voyage to Normandy an infuriating banishment.
Illegitimate daughter of Richard the Fearless, the Viking Duke of Normandy, Ylva is a Druid priestess and Celtic healer with the otherworldly gift of sight. She learns that she must leave her Breton village behind and travel to Normandy, where she will marry the Viking brute that she has foreseen in a terrifying vision.
When the Frankish king, determined to drive the Vikings from Normandy, attacks and seizes Richard’s clifftop fortress, the Dragon of Denmark must ally with Ljósálfar Light Elves, a Viking völva with powerful seiðr magic, and a vitki-- a shapeshifting sorcerer who can assume the form of a falcon--to reclaim the ducal palace.
Dragon of Denmark is a sizzling, scintillating blend of historical fiction, Norse mythology, paranormal fantasy, and steamy Viking romance!
My Review:
An arranged marriage for political power has Celtic healer and druidess Yiva in the crosshairs between the Vikings and a Frankish king. Can the alliance bring love or only destruction? Dragon of Denmark is a thrilling Viking romance with fantasy elements. This book has everything I’ve come to expect from Jennifer Ivy Walker: riveting narration, flawless world-building, adventure at every turn, and characters so vibrant, they leap from the page. Dragon at Denmark truly is unforgettable and impossible to put down.
I’ve read a lot of historical Viking romances recently. What I love about Dragon of Denmark is how Jennifer Ivy Walker delivers on the gritty nature of Vikings. They are not romantic or sympathetic marauders. They have a strict code which rules them. Reading Dragon of Denmark is like stepping back in time, with some Norse mythology thrown in.
The descriptive narration and world-building work together to draw the reader into the story. The narration is equal parts descriptive and emotional. The world-building is flawless and creates a world readers will find alluring and unforgettable.
The romance is a blending of tropes and genres. I fell in love with the hero and heroine, right along with them. Jennifer Ivy Walker weaves romance, no matter the setting or time period. It’s a wonderful experience. I look forward to reading more in this series.
