Title: Earl of Brecken (Wicked Earls’ Club) (Once Upon A Widow Book 5)
Author: Aubrey Wynne
Genre: Regency Romance, Historical Romance, Wicked Earls’ Club
Book Blurb:
A seductive Welsh earl on the brink of ruin. A wealthy cit in search of a hero. Miss Evelina Franklin reads too many romance novels. She’s certain a handsome duke—or dashing highwayman—is in her future. In the meantime, Evie entertains herself with the admirers vying for her fortune. The Earl of Brecken needs cash. His late father left their Welsh estate in ruin, and his mother will not let him rest until it is restored to its former glory. Notorious for his seductive charm, he searches the ballrooms for a wealthy heiress. His choices are dismal until he meets Miss Franklin. Guileless and gorgeous with an enormous dowry, she seems the answer to his prayers. Until his conscience makes an unexpected appearance.
My Review:
A wealthy heiress longing for a romantic hero, a Welch earl in desperate need of cash, but what happens when love enters the equation? Evie Franklin is a true romantic and sincerely believes her dashing hero will whisk her away to a life beyond her dreams, just like in all those romance novels she reads. But when she meets handsome Madoc, Earl of Brecken, she's smitten. He's everything she's ever read about and seduces her. But all is not as it seems for poor Evie. There's an estate manager who's absconded with Madoc's funds and he's in desperate need of money, like her fortune. Evie must decide if Madoc loves her only for her wealth or for herself. More importantly, does Evie love him or is in love with some idealistic notion from her romance books?
Earl of Brecken is a fun, flirty Regency romance and another inventive installment of the Wicked Earls’ Club. Aubrey Wynne is an established author and one of my favorites. With Earl of Brecken, she takes a different approach and I found it rather refreshing. There were scenes where the hero and heroine didn't make an appearance but allowed some of the minor characters to shine. The plot is well-paced with an overabundance of Regency-era vernacular. This added to the descriptive narration and increased my enjoyment of the story. The characters were interesting and offered an unexpected perspective on the whole marry for money theme. There isn't much conflict which is an issue for some but not for me. If you love sweet Regency romance, you'll love Earl of Brecken. Highly recommend!
