Excerpt:
Just as Callie was turning to let the stationmaster know she may need to leave her trunk with him, she bumped into a short man standing directly behind her. Callie’s first thought was that Chris Cringle had appeared early since the man was much the same height as Callie at five foot. He had a long white beard, a pipe hanging out of his mouth, and was wearing a bright red plaid shirt and black boots.
Callie gave a start and exclaimed, “Oh, I’m sorry, I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
The man grabbed his scruffy ten-gallon hat off his head and asked, “Are you, St. Michaels?” His light blue eyes crinkled at the corners as he looked at her with interest.
Callie answered, since this must be her escort to the ranch, “It’s Miss, but please call me, Callie. It’s less of a mouthful.”
The man gave a nod of his head and a smile that showed through the thick white mustache and beard. “Well, don’t that beat all? We’re gonna have to write Mr. Herbert, that attorney in Kansas City, a great big thank-you note for hiring you. My name’s Sully, short for Sullivan since it’s less of a mouthful.”
Holding out his hand, Callie put her much smaller gloved hand into it. The man shook it energetically and continued, “Yup, we’re gonna thank Herbert greatly.”
Callie retrieved her hand, laughing at his enthusiasm. “You haven’t even tasted my cooking, yet. What if I burn the biscuits? Or feed you beans every day?”
“Miss, you can feed them boys anything you want and they’ll come back for seconds just to see your smile.” Sully moved over to the trunk and tipped it up on its wheels asking, “This yor only luggage besides the bag you got ahold of?”
