Title: Hengist: Exile, Warlord, Britain’s First Anglo-Saxon King
Author: Sean Poage
Genre: Historical Fiction
Book Blurb:
A jealous brother drove a boy from his home, expecting him to die on the hostile sea. Instead, the boy fought to manhood, became a famed warlord, and the first Anglo-Saxon king in Britain.
HENGIST
Hengist claimed he came to Britannia a willing exile. But the truth is . . . more complicated. His path was not straight. His hands, not clean. The truth sets the stage for the bitter conflict between the Anglo-Saxons and the Britons.
Sail with Hengist and his warband and witness the opening moves in the long struggle for Britain.
* This novel is based on the research of J.R.R. Tolkien, arguing that the Hengist recorded in Beowulf, the History of the Britons, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles and other sources refer to the same man, and were based on historical people and events.
My Review:
Fans of the amazing Arthurian age series will just have to get their hands on this book. This book is a sweeping almost prequel that is a wonder to read.
The research for this book is impressive. Once more Poage has created a vivid description of what life in the 5th century was like. The rich and articulate descriptions are beautifully done.
The action scenes are some of the best I have read in books about this time period. The character development is strong and realistic. Sean Poage seems to really capture what feels like early dark ages personalities.
If you have read the Arthurian works of this author, then you will want to read this book. If you are a fan of the classic show Vikings, you will want to read this book. I might even recommend it to the old GOT fanbase. A quality book worth reading.
