Collection Story excerpt from Hidden Secrets by Dania Voss

“Still getting ready?” Her best friend since they were little, Seth Wilson, leaned against the bathroom doorframe, eyeing Cassidy suspiciously.

Nothing got past the former marine and Theo’s Executive Chef at the pub’s Cascade Springs location.

“What do you mean?” Cassidy replied, hoping playing dumb would work on her friend.

Her big, burly brother from another mother rolled his eyes. “Cass, what the fuck?” Never one to mince words which was what Cassidy loved about him, although maybe not at the moment.

She tossed her makeup on the vanity counter and turned to face the music.

“What do you want me to say?” She felt like shit already and didn’t need Seth’s judgmental attitude piled on top of her already conflicted emotions.

Seth folded his arms across his broad chest. “Theo’s family, dammit. He’s a good guy and doesn’t deserve you stringing him along. He’s in love with you for fuck’s sake.”

Cassidy winced. She wasn’t sure Theo was in love with her. The prospect was both terrifying and exciting to her. And she sure as hell didn’t want to delve too deeply into her feelings for Theo.

But everything Seth accused her of was true. Mostly. “I’m not stringing Theo along.” Her denial rang untrue to her own ears.

“BS. Since when have you ever given nearly two years of your attention to any other man? You’re in and out of relationships in two or three months. Tops. Not sure why, but there it is.” More true statements.

Cassidy blew out a frustrated breath. She was unable to explain herself when it came to Theo, even to her closest friend.

Seth pushed off the door frame and before she knew it, Cassidy was engulfed in one of his wonderful comforting hugs. “Talk to me, Cass. What’s going on?” he whispered before letting her go.

Tears threatened, but she kept them at bay. “I’m not trying to string Theo along. He’s a client so we spend a lot of time together.” She hated herself for making excuses. Especially to Seth. She treasured him and their friendship.

Seth gazed at her with concern. “And you’ve never gotten romantically involved with a client. That’s always been your policy. A good one. You’re playing with fire. A lot of people are going to get hurt if you’re not careful.”

Cassidy nodded. Didn’t Seth think she knew that? Even so, she couldn’t bring herself to distance herself from the sexy entrepreneur.

“I don’t think he’d fire you when things end between us. If that’s what you’re worried about.” Cassidy knew things would end. She just wanted a little more time with Theo before she eventually broke things off.

Seth’s lips thinned and he shook his head. “I doubt he would. Theo’s a professional. Not only am I the Executive Chef in Cascade Springs but I’m the Gastronomic Director for the company. Since taking over, I’ve elevated the restaurant side of operations and company profits have increased as a result.”

Cassidy was incredibly proud of Seth. He’d tagged along when she’d decided to move to Cascade Springs after Paige had. His culinary career had taken off since then. “I know, you’re right.”

“Whatever it is that’s been holding you back since you started dating, you can tell me. I won’t judge you.” Seth encouraged. “You’ve dated some decent men over the years. From engineers to attorneys and doctors but ended things quickly with all of them. This relationship, or whatever you want to call it with Theo is the only exception. Why?”

Cassidy kissed Seth on the cheek and returned to touching up her makeup. This particular issue was something she couldn’t bear to discuss with him. He’d just have to deal.

“I just can’t, okay? But I appreciate your concern.”

Seth nodded; his disappointment obvious on his face. “Got it. Just know I love you and if and when you want to talk about it, I’m here for you. Anytime. Anywhere.”

She smiled at him while looking at him in the mirror. He was a good man and a true friend. “I know. And you know I love you too.”

Seth kissed the back of her head and retook his place against the door frame. “So, you get to watch Phoenix overnight, huh? I’m surprised Frannie let you.” A smirk twitched at his lips.

“It’s always a battle. She wants Jesse, Jr. and Phoenix with her all the time. She cut us a break this time.” Jesse, Jr. was Theo’s sister Zoey’s little boy. Frannie’s first grandchild, who was nearly two years old.

Seth wore a wistful expression for a moment. “I can’t blame her. Phoenix is adorable. I can’t believe she’ll be turning a year old in three months.”

Adorable didn’t do Phoenix justice. Cassidy’s nine-month-old niece was precious – dark blonde hair, mesmerizing blue eyes and a sassy little attitude that challenged her daddy at every turn. Phoenix’s teen years were going to be a riot.

“I know. Christmas Eve has a whole new significance now because of her.” She and Paige had begun discussing the baby’s first birthday party and Cassidy couldn’t wait. The Christmas holiday was doubly blessed.

“And Theo? He’s good with the baby? You don’t get stuck doing everything?” Seth raised a suspicious brow.

Cassidy tossed her makeup in a drawer, as ready as she’d ever be and turned to face Seth. “He’s very good with her. And Jesse, Jr. And he’s been good about taking turns with diaper duty, baths and feedings.”

Theo’s “fatherly” skills had initially surprised her. He was patient and kind with his niece and nephew. Cassidy had no doubt he’d make a great father one day. Although she wouldn’t admit it to anyone, when she allowed herself to fantasize, she could see the two of them together as parents. Better not go there.

“Good. It’s only fair. I’m heading out to the pub. What I said stands. You can talk to me about anything. You don’t need to keep or hide secrets – especially from me.”

“I know.” Cassidy didn’t know what else to say. This was one secret she wouldn’t, couldn’t share, even with Seth.

Cassidy busied herself until she had to leave to get the baby. Theo was meeting her at Paige and Colt’s. His house was also on the same property.

She internally shook those thoughts of parenting with Theo away. They were pointless. It was dangerous territory she refused to consider. And what a shame that was.
