Book Blurb:
Time always passes. Love? Not so much.
Despite his superstar status during the rock and roll heyday of the 60’s and 70’s, Adam Payne has been laying low. He has no choice—it would be impossible to explain 70 years of looking 20 years old, especially since humankind doesn’t know wraiths and other supernatural creatures exist.
In order to avoid attachments and speculations, Adam changes gigs and zip codes every decade or so. No one from his past ever recognizes him, and that’s exactly the way he wants it. Until Indigo. Will they have a second chance at love?
This is a short story that takes place in the world of the Living After Midnight series. It is a stand-alone HFN story.
Excerpt:
"Ooh, baby! Shake what your Mama gave ya!”
“Sing to me, Royal!"
He stood in the middle of the sparse dining room and gave the small but enthusiastic crowd whatever they wanted. His number one hits on repeat? Of course. His signature dance move, a body roll, “and split into a one-handed push-up? You bet. To the women's delight, he could still do it. Thankfully, it was a no video, no pictures allowed performance. He was sure he looked ridiculous.
"For all my life, the brilliance of “your love, a beacon in the ebony sky, will lead me back to you," he crooned soulfully. The residents' collective life-force pulsated slow and hard, like the beating of a tired heart.
Just before he began the next number, a spunky green-haired woman wheeled herself around his microphone stand and tried to smack him on the behind. Titi, his friend and much beloved Graceful Manor CNA, hurried after her, fussing playfully and trying to get her back to her table. Adam raised his hand and nodded, indicating he had it under control. The aide laughed, gave him a thumbs-up, and went back to her chair.
It wasn't a big deal. He and this sexy senior had gone a few rounds “since she was admitted to the facility three months ago. Her memory wasn't what it used to be, but she knew what she wanted. And she wanted his butt. "Okay, Hattie. I know my ass is irresistible, but you can't have it.”
“Sure, I can. It's right here."
Adam jumped out of reach as she tried again to swat him. "Whoa! What do you say I give you a sloppy wet kiss instead?"
Canes waving in the air, the crowd cheered them on. Hattie beamed as his lips touched her pillowy, wrinkled cheek. "Now, how about you stay up here with me while I sing this last song?"

"Thanks for another great show, Adam. You're so good. If I close my eyes, you almost sound like Royal Payne." Eva Sanarra, Administrator of Graceful Manor, sat next to him as he packed his guitar.
He chuckled at the inadvertent insult. "That's what you pay me for. Thank you."
"Which reminds me." Ms. Sanarra crossed her fingers on both hands with an exaggerated motion. "Are you available next week? We need someone to MC the February birthday party on Wednesday. We do one each month celebrating everyone born in that month. Then--busy week-- we'd love to have you perform at our Valentine's Day Bash. Your usual fee for both, of course. I normally wouldn't bother you with last-minute requests, but Elvis canceled."
Adam grinned. He followed Ms. “Sanarra as she led him out of the dining room and toward the exit. "Sure. Text me the details, and I'll be here."
"Thank you. The residents will be excited to—"
"Royal? Is that you?”
Adam turned towards the singsong, fragile voice. A small woman using a walker inched her way toward him. She was a striking vision. An Eye of Ra necklace adorned her delicate neck. Silver and black hair braided into a ponytail extended past her shoulders. The pattern of wrinkles around her eyes and Clara Bow lips told the story of a lifetime of smiles and laughter.
"No, ma'am. I'm not him. I try to sound like him. It's my job.”
Her milky blue eyes searched his. "No, no. You're him. I would recognize your voice anywhere. How could that be? You're as old as I am. You have got to tell me your secret."
"I'm sorry, ma'am. My name is Adam, and although “my daughter thinks I'm a dinosaur, I'm not as old as Royal would be. What's your name?"
"Roberta. You called me Indigo.”
