Title: Journey of a JuBu
Author: Blaine Langberg
Genre: Metaphysical Fiction, Jewish Fiction
Book Blurb:
Dr. Jacob Silverstein, orthodontist by day, author by night, sends his protagonist, Adam Freeman, on a quest for spiritual enlightenment and inner peace. Following the maxim, "write what you know," Jacob has taken parts of his life and exaggerated them into The Adventures of Adam Freeman, DDS: a story of the struggle to achieve spirituality and mindfulness in today's pop-culture-obsessed society. Part pilgrimage, part romp, a blend of spiritual humor and meta-fiction, Journey of a JuBu is best summed up as "Seinfeld meets The Celestine Prophecy."
My Review:
There are myriad paths to spiritual enlightenment and not to be snarky, but this book does tell one of them. It is genuinely difficult to pin down what this book is about specifically, but in broad terms, it makes sense. This book will, with Larry David-esque humor, try to show heavily stressed Jewish professionals that it is ok to find enlightenment outside of the Temple.
I considered writing this review as someone who was writing a review about someone who was writing a review about someone writing a review but realized this book fills that literary void.
If you are a fan of Larry David, you will enjoy this book. If you have a modicum of moral fortitude, you will detest the 'character' of Adam with a deep hate. Be that as it may, this author shows some bravery in exposing his own weaknesses while trying to take it to a 2nd or 3rd person. A complex book about growth that could help a very specific group out of the morass of stress and emptiness.
My Rating: 4.25 stars
