N. N. Light’s Book Heaven is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Isn’t that wonderful?
I’d like to introduce prolific author Kathryn Hills.
Question 1: Where were you ten years ago in relation to your author/writer career? If you weren’t writing, what were you doing?
Ten years ago, I was in the early stages of becoming an author – writing, revising, polishing, and then polishing some more. I’d penned my first story, a time travel romance titled Haunting Highland House.
Fun Fact: It was inspired by a Victorian-era mansion on Cape Cod. And it’s haunted!
That was a turbulent time for me as I practiced, studied, attended writer’s conferences and workshops, and learned the ropes of what was expected of authors back then. Those were the days of traditional publishing houses only, so querying and pitching to them was a must.
I entered my first RWA (Romance Writers of America) chapter contest around that time—a query contest—and I won! That gave me enough wind in my sails to keep going. I queried publishers, pitched to editors and agents, and signed my first publishing contract with The Wild Rose Press.
Haunting Highland House – A Time Traveler’s Journey, Book 1 released on October 19, 2016. Book 2 in the series, Hellfire and Handbaskets, followed in the spring of 2018.
Question 2: Looking back on the past ten years, how has your writing grown?
After those first two books, I was invited to join a wonderful group of well-established authors known as The Romance Gems. Aside from an online presence, they were working on a collection of romantic short stories titled Last Chance Beach: Summer’s End. I was honored to be a part of their group and the project. There was only one problem. I needed to learn to write both short and sweet – something I’d never done before. Thanks to some coaching, I penned Secondhand Hearts – A Last Chance Beach Romance and started down a path I love to this day. Yes…my roots are in spicy time travel/fantasy romance, but I now have a bunch of sweet contemporary romances to offer readers.
In 2021, I added historical paranormal romance to my author’s repertoire with the publishing of The Ghosts of New England: Skullery Bay Anthology. That was a challenge because of things like period language and clothing. Plus, it was a unique anthology, including 4 books set in the same location yet spanning 4 centuries. That meant collaborating with other authors to give readers a consistent feel for the setting we co-created.
Question 3: What are you doing now? How many books have you published?
I’ve published 13 books to date, but not all are currently available. That will change this year as I re-release some of those backlist books. Stay tuned for a refresh, including beautiful new covers!
I’m also planning another Halloween romance, the second in my Magic of Two Crows Corner short and spicy series. Following that, it’s back to the charming, small town of Dickens for more holiday romance.
Could there be something completely new from me this year? You bet! But shh… It’s kind of a big deal and a secret.

About Kathryn Hills
Hauntingly romantic… Unless she’s writing sweet!
The rich history and many mysteries of New England are the perfect backdrop for many of Kathryn’s books. Winding roads lined by old stone walls, forgotten cemeteries, grand homes with shadowy pasts...all sparks for her imagination. Whether it’s a quaint seaside town or the vibrant city of Boston, it’s easy for this “hauntingly romantic” author to envision the past mingling with the present. No surprise, some of Kathryn’s favorite stories include ghosts. Sprinkle in some magic, and you’re off on a great adventure!
When not writing, this best-selling author is reading, researching, gardening, or cooking up something special in her chaotic kitchen. She shares her colonial home in the north woods with those she loves most – her wonderful husband, daughter, and four crazy rescue dogs.
