Greetings Readers!
For those who don’t know me, I’m Kim McMahill, and I write romantic suspense and dystopian adventure. I’m also an avid reader, gardener, nature lover, and travel junkie, who apparently has a very active imagination.
Nearly all of my writing has been influenced by my childhood and the places I’ve lived as an adult. I grew up in a rural community surrounded by millions of acres of public land. My family lived in the country, grew much of our own food, hunted, fished, and had many animals to care for and love. I learned to ride a horse before I learned to ride a bike, which might explain why I’m a hazard on a bike to this today. We participated in rodeo, and my dad’s idea of a family vacation was a pack trip into the wilderness of Wyoming.
My adult life has been about as different from my childhood as a person could get. College, careers, and travel took my husband and I on an amazing journey around the U.S. and the world. We’ve enjoyed many new experiences and living in large cities, but we’ve recently returned home. Some of the places we loved growing up have become overrun with people, but there is still plenty of remote, rugged, and beautiful places to explore, including the area where I based the fictional community of Beartooth. There are Beartooth Mountains, the Beartooth Highway, and Beartooth Pass, but there is no community except between the pages of my novels in The Beartooth Chronicles.
Currently, the Beartooth Highway is closed from about October to Memorial Day each year due to extreme amounts of snow. But what if all of the glaciers melted? What if the climate changed enough to allow year-round gardening at 9,000 feet in elevation? And what if our society collapsed?
In The Beartooth Chronicles, a small group establishes a mountain community away from a country riddled with violence and hate. The home they’ve created has provided a safe and peaceful existence, but as environmental disasters continue to multiply, bringing out the worst of humanity, the residents find themselves faced with a series of challenges that will test their ability to survive.
I hope you will join Ashley, Caleb, and the residents of Beartooth in this dystopian saga of survival, courage, love, and finding hope in the midst of natural and environmental threats and social collapse. Book 3 in the series, Isolated from Anarchy, was released today.
For those who haven’t yet joined in this epic adventure, the price of the first novel, Refuge from the World, has been reduced to just $0.99 (ebook), and the second, Above the Abyss, is now on sale for $2.99. The fourth novel in the series, Evil Under the Mountain, is scheduled for release in early 2025.

Ashley and Caleb enjoyed a carefree childhood in Beartooth, but things are changing in their isolated mountaintop community. The government plans to implement a geoengineering process to cool the planet, not all citizens are what they seem, deadly predators lurk outside the community, and Ash learns her mom is dying, forcing them to adapt to a dangerous world they never imagined.
Excerpt
Ash could see the pain etched on Caleb’s face as he lifted his left arm up to reach the saddle horn and gripped the back of the saddle with his right. Somehow, he managed to hoist himself into the saddle. He balanced the bow in front of him across the saddle.
“Even though you missed, you probably still saved my life, again,” Caleb said as they rode side-by-side down the rough dirt track.
“Apparently I didn’t have the first-timer luck that you had last night.”
“You shouldn’t have been put in this position at all.”
“We didn’t know what we’d find,” Ash reminded him. “I expected predators, but I didn’t expect this.”
“Me neither, or I would have never brought you out here.”
“Well, who would you rather have with you? Of the original settlers, most range in age from their late-forties to mid-sixties, and few of their offspring have the skills to survive what we have.”
“I’m not arguing your ability,” Caleb said. “You’ve proven yourself over and over. I just can’t bear the thought of anything happening to you, especially if it’s my fault for putting you in a dangerous situation in the first place.”
“Before we got married, you said we would be a team, that we would be partners in this life. I’d rather be with you than worry about you.”
“I meant every word about us being a team, but at the time, I never envisioned this.”

The residents of Beartooth have survived the first round of stratospheric aerosol injections intended to cool the planet, but predators have found their way to the community, outsiders have arrived seeking refuge, and their closest neighbor is now ruled by an extremist faction. As the nation continues to spiral towards anarchy, most residents believe their isolated location will shield them from human and animal invaders and a country in crisis, but Ash and Caleb have seen and heard too much to ever feel safe again.
Excerpt
“We’ve lived such a peaceful life for so long up here, and it seems like that’s starting to change. Our crops are threatened by SAI and the livestock are in danger from predators. What’s next?” Owen asked while shaking his head.
Ash and Caleb looked at each other, but neither mentioned that a group of well-armed, conspiracy-theory radicals may decide to eliminate the perceived evil on the mountain, or that a super volcano could erupt, wiping out most of the population of the U.S. And, if the volcano didn’t kill them directly, the ash spewed into the sky combined with the injected aerosols could cool the planet faster and more dramatically than humanity could adapt, making it impossible to survive.
For now, the community would do all they could to prepare for the changes they were aware of, like stratospheric aerosol injects and predators. Ash saw no point in making continued survival seem hopeless. If they lost hope, they would lose everything.

When the sound of an incoming helicopter interrupts Ash and Caleb Solomon’s fishing, it reminds them that their mountaintop community of Beartooth may be isolated, but it’s no secret from the outside world.
Ash, Caleb, and the residents of Beartooth struggle to develop stronger defenses, a new source of electricity, and increase food production to survive the longer, colder winters resulting from the government’s geoengineering program. And as the residents of Beartooth search for solutions to a growing number of threats, the rest of the world slips further into anarchy.
With few ways to protect themselves against intruders, the residents retreat from conflict, but will it be enough to save them from their first encounter with their ruthless neighbors?
Excerpt
The rare sound of a helicopter interrupted their fishing. The helicopter looked to be following the old, damaged highway toward their small, isolated, mountaintop community of Beartooth, Wyoming, located a mile away.
Ash and Caleb quickly reeled in their lines. Ash gathered their gear while Caleb slung his quiver of arrows over his shoulder and grabbed his bow. They left the lake at a fast pace.
“We’ve never seen a helicopter this close or flying so low,” Ash said as she struggled to keep up with Caleb’s longer stride.
“I just hope they don’t land, and quickly move on,” Caleb replied.
As Ash and Caleb reached the field Caleb’s family farmed, which was furthest from the community, the helicopter gained altitude, made a wide banking turn, and then headed west. They slowed their pace, hoping the helicopter’s departure meant the community was safe, at least for now.

Book Blurb
When researcher Grace Talbot and her team discover a possible solution for weight loss, they are targeted by a group out to control the diet product industry worth billions. Her unsanctioned testing methods bring tragedy to the family ranch and the attention of the local sheriff’s deputy. With her colleagues either dead, missing, or on the run she soon realizes she must trust the deputy with her life, but can she trust him with her heart?
Excerpt
A desperate pounding noise on the driver’s side window brought Grace abruptly out of her helpless sobbing. She lifted her head, wiped the tears from her cheeks with the sleeve of her coat, and looked at the face staring back at her through the fogged window.
The man stopped knocking on the glass the moment her eyes met his. He stepped back and crossed his arms in front of his chest. As she studied his expression, she decided it didn’t look at all friendly. Quickly assessing her options, no good plan came to mind, and she was too exhausted to care.
Grace took several deep breaths to summon her courage and unbuckled her seat belt. When she got out of the truck and stood in front of the man, it took a moment before she felt strength return to her tired legs. Grace didn’t consider herself a short woman, but she had to tilt her head back to look into his cold, unreadable eyes. She had never seen this man before. She was certain, if she had, she would have remembered those broad shoulders, square jaw, and the power in his wide stance.
“Who are you, and what are you doing here?” Grace demanded, trying to sound tougher than she felt.
A smile slowly eased slowly across his lips, softening the hard planes of his rugged face.
“You must be Grace, Moss’s niece.”

Excerpt
“Here. Let me check your injuries.”
He nodded, but made no effort to take off the souvenir t-shirt he’d purchased in Mexico to replace the shirt destroyed at Señorita Ruiz’s hacienda.
Olivia eased the shirt over his head and dabbed at the scratches on his chest with a warm washcloth. Not until her fingers began tracing some of the deeper wounds, trying to determine if any debris still remained imbedded that might cause infection, did Cash acknowledge her close proximity. He reached up, grabbed her hand, and brought it to his lips.
He kissed her palm so gently that Olivia could taste his pain. Tears filled her eyes and slid down her cheeks. She wasn’t sure why his agony touched her so deeply, but it did. “I’m sorry,” was all she could think of to say, knowing it wasn’t enough.
They sat for several minutes in silence, hand in hand. Olivia hated to free herself from Cash’s warm touch, but she doubted he was ready to talk about Zara, and the guilt and fatigue in his lost eyes tore at her heart.
Olivia stood, easing out of Cash’s grasp. She placed her hands on his shoulders and gently maneuvered him back until he lay on the sofa. He didn’t resist as she unlaced his hiking boots and pulled them off, draped a blanket over him, and turned out the lamp. She touched her lips to his forehead and left him alone in the dark with his demons.
