Mystical Beats & Eats or The Beats, as it was affectionately called, screamed Dee's name as she finished up dinner. The Beats was the place to be on Thursday nights, Karaoke night. Dee checked her watch confirming she had at least an hour before leaving to meet her friends, Quinn Perry and Angela Johnson. Fun, food, catching up and a round of Karaoke guaranteed a perfect girls’ night out. The trio wanted to arrive early since everyone who was anyone, regardless of age, would be relaxing and grooving. Prancing in after 7:30 guaranteed no seat--'standing room' only.
Dee wanted to firm up their respective plans for the holidays. It was only early November, but they had a lot on their plates. Family plans, job plans, travel plans. This would be Dee and Quinn's first holiday season in Mystical Springs. The two had no idea what to expect. Home town girl, Angela, planned to give them the 411 on the town's annual festivities.
Mystical Springs, Texas temps in the low to mid 80's made Dee happy that she hadn't left Hot-lanta to be greeted by a chilly Texas. She and Kevin had purchased a few jackets, heavy sweaters and hats 'just in case' but hadn't needed to pull them out of the closets yet. Quinn, accustomed to cooler northeast fall and winter seasons had packed her coats, scarves, gloves, hats and boots--not quite certain what to expect but her closet guaranteed she'd be prepared.
For the first time in years, Dee and her friends felt like they had something to celebrate and based on their calendars, they'd be making merry throughout the holiday season. Kevin's mother highly recommended Austin. She'd already invited Kevin and Dee to visit for a weekend and needed their commitment, so she could buy theater tickets and make dinner reservations.
Dee was enthused about the Austin Theatre Company's annual production of A Christmas Carol but was concerned because she didn't know if work-based schedules would allow them to get away for a full weekend. She made a mental note to touch base with Kevin, so they could commit one way or the other. Their new not-for-profit was just getting off the ground and Kevin and his newfound friend and business partner, Vance Jones, were knee deep in a town project. Plus, she really wanted some girl time—that did not include her mother or her mother-in-law who was also biting at the chops expecting Kevin and Dee to spend Christmas with the family. Although Dee had not yet discussed it with Kevin yet, she was hoping that they could host Christmas at their new home and combine the Torres and O'Connor celebrations with an open house at the newly established TorOcon Adoption & Foster Care Service Center.
Dee's 'To Do' list included another item--a 'hot one' with a five-star rated priority. Quinn and Angela were single and unbeknownst to them, Dee had already donned her invisible red and green matchmaker hat. The holiday dating game was about to launch. Her two friends appeared too bashful or busy to seek male companionship. She planned to remedy that. If she played ‘their cards’ for them, although not a betting woman, she’d wager two to one on her intuitive people skills. Plus, she believed in Santa. Between the two of them, the ladies would have 'made to match' escorts by their sides for the holiday season.
Dee freshened her makeup, fluffed her naturally curly jet-black hair and winked at the smiling image she saw in the downstairs powder room mirror. --Bright hazel brown eyes, no bags in sight, clear smooth gold toned complexion--no acne breakouts, wide pouty lips now decorated with her favorite buttery caramel lip gloss. Her bright crimson, yellow and Christmas green cashmere sweater and grab bag gold hoops completed her attire. The girls had agreed to launch their official start of the holiday season tonight. Her smile reminded her of who she was. Deidre Torres-O'Connor, educated and talented, happily married, new not-for-profit partner in the TorOcon Adoption & Foster Care Service and a young woman who had finally found peace. She had less than a 20-minute ride to The Beats, a drive she could now make in her sleep. She whistled as she set the house alarm system not yet accustomed to leaving her doors unlocked like most Mystical Springs residents. In time, she smiled and thought--But maybe never. She skipped down the walk to her parked car like a young girl on her way to visit Santa Claus at the Mall.
If asked, no one would have thought that a big city Fortune 500 HR Executive could find love, peace and joy in a small town like Mystical Springs.

What I love most about the holiday season:
I love everything about Christmas and the holiday season—even the snow which I truly miss now that I live in the South. Christmas and the holiday spirit of love it brings is so special to me and my family. I have shared most of my childhood traditions with my children and my readers!
My mother and my grandmother ensured that all of our Christmases were super special. Family fun—would you believe we annually performed our own version of ‘A Christmas Carol’? Our favorite homemade holiday goodies and Christmas caroling—
memories that I will never forget. And, most importantly, we continue each year to honor the purpose and reason for the season; ‘the most wonderful time of year’.
Why is your featured book a must-read to get you in the holiday mood?
Love Rescues reminds me and, hopefully, my readers as well, of the importance of love. Love as more than a powerful emotion, but love in action. What it looks like, what it feels like, and, consistent with my theme and purpose in writing The What Love Can Do Series—what love can do. In so doing, Love Rescues is symbolic of the true meaning of the Christmas season—a testament of the gift of God’s love for us.
