Excerpt:

"This is one of them coincidences that come along once in a lifetime." He spread his hands. "Did you know that Blackjack McGuire's three kids live over there in Miss Myra's asylum?"

Lucky vaguely recalled that Blackjack McGuire was a petty gambler and two-bit con man before an unknown assailant killed him several years back. "So?"

"So back in 1914, before somebody plugged him in the back, Blackjack made off with the money Eddie stole from the Summerville State Bank and hid it somewhere. Lots of people think the oldest McGuire kid knows where that money's stashed." A sly smile skipped across Zeke's homely face." Now what's the first thing Old Eddie's gonna do when he gets out of jail?"

Lucky knew Eddie Bruce. "He'll come looking for that kid."

Zeke smiled. "You got it."

Lucky scratched his head. "So, you think I should go over to the asylum and hang around until Eddie shows up?"

Zeke rubbed his hand across the back of his neck as he riveted Charlie with a warning look. "That ain't exactly what I had in mind."

"What then?" Lucky prompted. "Speak up, Zeke."

"Well," Zeke shifted his wad of tobacco to his other cheek. "Blackjack's oldest kid is a girl. Only she's a woman now, turned eighteen three months ago. She's a proper brought up young lady. Miss Myra saw to that."

Lucky rubbed his hand along the side of his face. "And?"

"If you was to marry her and bring her and her brothers here, this is where Eddie would come, first pop out of the bottle. You could kill Eddie outright and nobody, not even Sheriff Turner, could fault you. Fact is you'd be doing a good turn, saving that poor little girl's life. Besides that, Aunt Trudy would be satisfied. She'd give us our ranch and everybody would be happy." He leaned back and grinned.
