Excerpt:
Unsure if she really wanted to know the town’s deep dark secret, she moved the discussion toward the holiday festival. “The town puts on a holiday festival for Christmas?” She took a sip of wine.
“Sure.” He took a swig of his beer. “We love a celebration. Thanksgiving, we have our own turkey parade.”
Snorting and spraying her wine across the table, she choked out a breath. “Define turkey, the bird or person?”
The waitress rushed over. “Are you all right?” She surveyed red and white checkered table cloth splotched with red wine. “I’ll get this cleaned up right away.” Pointing at the cuff of his light blue shirt, she commented, “You might want to get some club soda on that stain.”
He glanced at his shirt cuff. There were tiny spots of red wine all over it. Glancing at Wynter, he grimaced. “Excuse me. I’ll only be a minute.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry.” Embarrassed beyond belief, she felt her face flush from her neck to the tips of her ears. “Not a good impression on a first date.” The words were barely audible.
“Don’t worry about it. At least it wasn’t blood from the scuffle outside. Never a dull moment.” He met her gaze. “Will you still be here when I return?”
She startled. The gold flecks in his emerald green eyes shimmered, or at least she thought they did. It was as if he read my mind. Nodding, she smiled. “I’ll be here.”
“Good.” He rushed toward the bar.
The waitress returned with a new tablecloth and replaced the old one. “Don’t you worry about it.” Nikki patted her shoulder. “Worse things happen on a daily basis when you have a town like ours.”
That was the second time someone referred to Raven’s Hollow as not an ordinary town. Shifters? A town like this? I’ll figure it out.
Blaze returned, holding his arm out with a damp cuff, less red spots. “See, all is fine.” He slid into his seat as the waitress brought the pizza and plates to their table.
Nikki quickly sliced it and slid pieces onto the plates.“Enjoy. Another beer, Blaze?”
“Yes.” He finished off the mug, handed it to her, then picked up a piece of pizza and took a bite. “Best pizza in Colorado.”
She picked up a fork and cut a bite, popped it in her mouth. “Mmmm… this is fantastic.”
“It's the wood fire ovens that make the crust crispy and the toppings cooked to perfection.” He grinned. “Not to mention my secret ingredient in the sauce.”
“Gee, you’d think you owned the place.” She giggled and started to relax, taking another bite of pizza.
He reached across the table to pour more wine into her glass.
Without thinking, “Oh, no. I’ve—“ she placed her hand over the glass as he poured the wine. Wine splashed on her hand. She waved her other hand suspending the liquid in mid-air until she yanked her hand out of the way. Spell broken, the wine splashed into her glass. What have I done? Quickly, she surveyed the room.
Righting the bottle, he cocked an eyebrow in question and glanced around. No one seemed to notice. “So you have secrets of your own.”
“Apparently, and they are going to remain mine.” She dabbed the red cloth napkin to her lips and stood. “This was a bad idea.” Sprinting between the round wooden tables scattered around the room, she headed toward the door. Once outside, she sucked in the cold night air. What was I thinking? With no one in sight, she raced to her truck, raised her arms, and disappeared along with her vehicle.

Share a holiday family tradition:
On Friday after Thanksgiving, my family sets up the Christmas Tree (ours is artificial because I’m allergic to evergreens). We play Christmas Carol CD’s on the sound system, sing along with the carols drink hot chocolate and eat ginger cookies or cinnamon rolls. The decorations for our tree are multi-generational. It’s fun to reminisce about where each ornament came from and who it belonged to.
