N. N. Light’s Book Heaven is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Isn’t that wonderful?
Â
Yes! Congratulations!
Â
I’d like to introduce you to romance author Misty Urban.
Â
Question 1: Where were you ten years ago in relation to your author/writer career? If you weren’t writing, what were you doing?
Â
Ten years ago, I was on the cusp of a milestone birthday that I felt was going to make or break my writing career. We’d moved house, I would be teaching at a new college, and after several rounds of rejections, I’d asked the universe for a sign if I should keep trying to publish. Two days before my birthday, as I came out of the wilderness after a camping trip with my family, I checked my voicemail. My short story collection had been chosen for a prize, for which there was a cash reward and a publication contract. My delight was enormous, but so was my relief. I felt reassured that writing was truly my path. Thanks, universe! And also, Snake Nation Press.
Â
Question 2: Looking back on the past ten years, how has your writing grown?
Â
I’ve branched out into different genres from medieval scholarship and the literary short story. I’ve published flash fiction, creative nonfiction, and novels, contemporary and historical. Lately I’ve moved from the literary world into the world of commercial fiction, and I love writing historical romance. It’s a dream come true.
Â
Question 3: What are you doing now? How many books have you published?
Â
After the publication of that debut short story collection, A Lesson in Manners, I published two more short story collections, a contemporary fantasy novel, a contemporary romance, and six historical romances—the Ladies Least Likely series from Oliver Heber Books. That covers the fiction; I’ve continued to publish articles on medieval scholarship and creative nonfiction as well.

Author Biography:
Â
Misty Urban fell in love with stories at an early age and has spent her life among books as a teacher, scholar, editor, writer, and bookseller. Her favorite stories take you new places, teach you new things, and end with a win. She especially likes romances about unconventional heroines who defy the odds and the unexpected heroes who woo them, so that’s mostly what she writes. When she puts down the book she likes to take long walks, drag her family to new places, or hang out around water, dreaming up new stories.
