Title: MOMcarcerated

Author: M.R. Abbott

Genre: Humorous Satire

Book Blurb:

Mom’s famous last words before running afoul of the law...

“I’ll just have to go to the senior center and find myself ‘an old geezer’ to marry. Then I won’t have to move!”

Mom needs a man around the house again after a few minor mishaps got out of control. The flooding, fire, and killer bees have convinced her grown children that it’s time… and now Mom’s beloved home is up for sale.

Fiercely independent and with a mind of her own, Mom is a spunky widow who wants nothing more than to enjoy her home and garden, do a little crocheting, talk to her dog, order endless products on infomercials, and… count her blessings.

Instead, she finds herself incarcerated. But things are never dull with this lady. She is still stubborn as a mule, very resilient, and even when things look their bleakest, she manages to find a blessing and reminds others to do the same.

My Review:

Mom may be forgetful but she’s fiercely independent, and her grown children don’t know what to do when she winds up behind bars. MOMcarcerated is a humorous story about growing older, dealing with an aging parent, and being true to yourself. The narration is heavy on humorous satire which had me laughing out loud while reading. The characters are well-written and really make MOMcarcerated impossible to put down.

Let’s start with the characters. Mom is the star of the book. Her thoughts, actions, and feelings are quirky, relatable, and hilarious. Her garden is her empire and everything that happens is a snapshot to Mom’s life. Mom is brilliantly written, and I cheered her on, no matter what was happening.

Mom’s three grown children are expertly written. They try to understand their mother but don’t seem to make the time. M.R. Abbott showcases the emotional roller coaster of caring for an elderly parent. They simply want her out of the way so they can live their lives uninterrupted. Realistically written and poignant.

MOMcarcerated is classic satire because while it is funny, the truth hits home. Growing older is difficult and caring for an elderly parent is a struggle, too. Compassion and understanding are what’s needed, and this is the point MOMcarcerated hammers home.

My Rating: 5 stars

Author Biography:

M.R. Abbott has been writing fiction in both screenplay and novel formats since 2010 when she and her husband became empty nesters and moved to Europe. Living in Germany for four years provided time and inspiration to write.

M.R. enjoys research and travel, particularly as it relates to subjects and characters that she develops in her stories. Her faith in God and love of family are recurring themes that are woven in to give audiences and readers that aha moment of personal connection and revelation.

Home is a relative term to M.R. and her husband of forty-one years. They’ve been accused of moving a lot. They do put their wanderlust to good use to visit their five children and eight grandchildren in the states of Nevada, Utah, and Georgia.

While there are many verses that are highlighted in M.R.’s beloved, worn and tattered Bible from the 1970’s, there is one verse that over the years has become her favorite:

“Now glory be to God, who by His mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of – infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes.” Ephesians 3:20 (TLB)
