In spite of being new in town and dealing with both a social phobia and a secret, will Breanna be able to solve the crime and prove the dog's innocence? Will she be able to find his forever home so she can embrace the salty seaside life and find a forever home for herself?
Excerpt:
I descended the steps of my Airbnb, ran across the boardwalk, toed off my flipflops, and splashed into the cool water.
“Yay! I’m here!” I called out to no one. After Labor Day, the summer tourists were long gone. The island was empty except for the locals, and even some of them only lived here part of the year. I had the sand to myself. How could I resist the pull of the sea? And the unparalleled beauty of the ocean that looked so different with the sun about to dip behind the dunes. My choppy hair whipped around my face, causing me to pull a dark brown strand from my mouth. The salty breeze expanding my lungs and the sound of the surf exploding in my ears brought a rush of adrenaline.
My smile kept breaking into a wide grin while I wrapped my arms around my chest and hugged myself. Finally, I could think about it. Finally, I could let it advance from the back of my mind; I could focus on it fully.
I had some news, some really big news. Big-big.
Something I couldn’t share with anyone.
It was overwhelming and mind-blowing and required time to sink in. I still needed to wrap my head around it.
Not even my ex- knew. My boyfriend had dropped me before it all went down, so I didn’t get a chance to tell him. Usually I was the one to do the breaking up, and I considered his dumping me a favor.
That’s when I’d taken that first step. I’d packed a few belongings, tossed the rest, and drove a thousand miles in my yellow Jeep from the big city of Chicago to the small city of Sea Oats Beach, a quaint, touristy seaside town in North Carolina I’d chosen on a whim.
It was the most daring thing I’d ever done. A new place. A new life. Volunteering at the animal shelter was part of this risky new world I was determined to step into. My big news would have to stay my secret.
