N. N. Light’s Book Heaven is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Isn’t that wonderful?
I’d like to introduce to you women’s fiction author NG Avant.
Question 1: Where were you ten years ago in relation to your author/writer career? If you weren’t writing, what were you doing?
Ten years ago, I was working in municipal politics—a path I hadn’t planned but one that shaped me in unexpected ways. My background is in journalism, and after graduating, I worked for a fly-fishing magazine before moving to Ottawa and joining a construction newspaper. I eventually landed in politics, initially in a communications role, before working my way up to managing an office. My time in politics was eye-opening, and the experiences I had there ultimately inspired my Capital City series. Writing these books has been both cathartic and empowering, allowing me to reclaim my voice after years of feeling powerless.
Question 2: Looking back on the past ten years, how has your writing grown?
Especially in the past five years, my writing has evolved significantly. Before 2020, my experience was in non-fiction and reporting, but diving into fiction opened up a whole new world for me. I've learned to tap into emotions in a way I never had before, aiming to create stories that make readers feel—to validate their experiences and remind them that they aren’t alone. I also draw inspiration from current events, pop culture, and the realities of modern life, weaving them into my storytelling.
Question 3: What are you doing now? How many books have you published?
I’ve published four books—two full-length novels and two novellas in the Capital City series. Another novella is coming out in April. Right now, I’m deep into writing the third novel, and I have so many plans for what’s next. It feels like I’ve opened Pandora’s box, and fiction has become my greatest passion. I’ve fully embraced writing as my career, and I couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead. I am an author.
