Title: Operation Infatuate
Author: Andrew Weston
Genre: Historical Action/Adventure
Book Blurb:
47 (Royal Marine) Commando have been at the forefront of No 4 Special Service Brigade’s advance through Normandy since D-Day began. However, Hitler’s response to the Allied invasion gathers apace, with a massive influx of troops and armor throughout France, Belgium, Denmark and eastern Germany itself.
And nowhere are those reinforcements more imposing than at Walcheren Island, sitting at the mouth of the Scheldt Estuary. For the Scheldt leads to the strategic port of Antwerp, and Antwerp is the perfect location for the final push toward Berlin.
Little wonder, then, that Commando Regimental Sergeant Major Richard—Lion— Hart, CGM, MiD, and his men find themselves in the thick of it, for the assault will prove one of the most important, decisive battles of World War II.
My Review:
The climactic conclusion to the brilliant fictional account of 47 Commando in World War 2. If you have read the first two amazing books in this series, then this is a mega must read for you. The story comes to a completion here in the quality of writing people have come accustomed to finding from Andrew Weston.
Here the Commando unit faces its deadliest mission with their part in the operation to clear the Scheldt Estuary from German occupation. This is an incredibly realistic work. The hidden truth of war is brought to the forefront. I learned it first from a gifted professor who was my thesis advisor. He said war wasn't hell, war is killing and death. That is the simple bottom line which Operation Infatuate brings clearly into focus.
This series really reminds me of a great war bio I read frequently. In Seven Roads to Hell, Donald Burgett points out that upon reaching the Battle of the Bulge, he and only two others from the original squad who landed on D-Day were still with the unit. That is the kind of loss long-term deployment of a unit creates. This is perfectly illustrated here. Lion - Hart finds that less and less of his unit seems to be with him as the war goes on.
This is a fantastic series worth reading from start to finish in one read. This book is comprehensive, honest and brutal in its realism. War is not for the squeamish (truly not for humanity in a perfect world) and this book is not for the squeamish either. Fans of great military fiction will want to read this book. I loved the book and loved the series.
