My Review:
Soldier Ryan McGowan vows revenge for his brother's death, even if it means to slaughter every Indian in the Ohio territory. When his superior tasks him with teaching English to a woman found sobbing over a dead warrior, he's furious. He just wants them all dead. Màxkchulëns teaches Ryan the power of forgiveness and slowly, she melts away his hatred. He tries to change her beliefs from the Lenape tribe to the faith of her biological parents. It's a struggle for her as all she wants to do is return to her tribe, the only family she's known since she was four years old. When he discovers the woman he's learned to care for is carrying her dead husband's child. Can he see beyond his hatred to embrace love and grace?
Patriot's Courage is an emotional frontier story I couldn't put down. Penelope Marzec takes on some serious topics like vengeance, faith, tolerance, love, and grace with such poignant descriptive narration, it was a pleasure to read. Historically accurate, I transported to another time and place. I applaud Penelope Marzec for her research and intricate detailing of the Lenape tribal customs and the Ohio territory in this time period. I connected with both Ryan and Màxkchulëns immediately. The faith theme is very strong but blends nicely with the romance between the hero and heroine. What I loved most about Patriot's Courage are the characters. They have such a human fraility to them, I couldn't help but feel a part of the story. This is my first book by Penelope Marzec and honestly, I can't wait to read more. If you love frontier historical fiction, you'll really enjoy this one. Highly recommend!
