“What the hell’s going on out here?” Bend interrupted.
Carol swiveled and the source of the argument came into view. Chosen Shaw, and she didn’t look a bit happy. Her glazed eyes targeted him. Her cheeks were flaming pink and her lips were pursed. He didn’t have time to greet her properly because she rounded Carol’s feeble attempt at blocking and marched over.
“Just the man I wanted to see!” Chosen seethed.
“Sorry, Sheriff. She wouldn’t take no for an answer,” Carol shrieked. “Do you want me to toss her out?”
“Let’s not get carried away.” Although he had a feeling the petite brunette wanted to toss him through the window, he thought he could handle himself. He didn’t need to ask why she wanted to throttle him. The newspaper article had the town in an uproar. Could he blame Chosen for being angry? Her name was leaked before he even had a chance to run anything past her. “I see you’ve read today’s paper.”
She had the incriminating evidence with her and she gave the paper a shake, piercing him with her pristine blue stare. “How could you do this? What gives you the right to drag me into this without my knowledge? Who do you think you are?”
It was then he realized she wasn’t alone. She had a black kitten tucked under one arm. Bend wanted to laugh but it wasn’t at all appropriate. “How about you come into my office and we talk about this like civilized adults?”
Her frown deepened. “Are you insulting me? Are you saying I’m not civilized?”
“No.” He pressed his fingers into his temple where a headache was starting. “Can we please take this into my office?”
With a huff, she brushed past him and stomped through the open door of the office.
“You should have let me throw her out.”
He glanced over at Carol who looked like a mother cat ready to pounce on the mouse. “Thanks, but I got this.” The last thing he needed was more trouble.
Before he crossed over the threshold, he took a second to clear his head.
Once he stepped inside, he closed the door behind him and took a seat on the corner of his desk. Chosen was sitting with the kitten on her lap who seemed about as confused as Bend felt.
“About the newspaper—”
“Do you not have a moral code?” At least her voice had lowered a notch in tone. “Did you stop and think what this would be like for me?”
“Do you think I did this? What would I have to gain by leaking to the press that I can’t solve a case on my own?” He wanted to wring the neck of the person who had a big mouth.
“For the record, it’s a cold case which entirely implies it couldn’t be solved, and this invades my privacy.” She tossed the newspaper onto the desk. “If this is a lie, we should force the editor to retract the information. Demand a public apology.”
He ran his palms down his face. “Here’s the snag—”
“Oh great.” She moaned.
“The write up isn’t entirely false. I did intend to speak to you and ask for help.”

Author Biography
Rhonda Lee Carver is a bestselling author of contemporary western and romantic suspense, but she loves to write other genres too. She's known for writing stories that keep readers laughing, crying, gripping the edge of their seats, and screaming all in one book...like riding a virtual roller coaster. Whether she's creating sexy cowboys or tough guys, or sassy, independent heroines, readers are sure to find strong, powerful, memorable characters that are relatable.
By day, she taps into her creative, fictional world but at some point she transitions back into reality where she's a volleyball-stands cheerleader, homework virtuoso (at least she thinks so), amateur nurse to skinned knees, mediocre chef with some awesome microwave skills, pet-guru (all the strays show up at her house), and a Jackie of all trades for her kids who are the loves of her life. Yoga and chocolate keep her sane. Hallmark movies require cuddling up with tissues because she can be emotional. She adds a sprinkle of her own real-life adventures in each story she spins because a little truth never hurt anyone. She wouldn't give up one thing in her crazy, chaotic, ever-amusing life, except, she might do magic tricks for the bungalow on the beach she's had her eye on (GOALS).
Writing for Rhonda is like falling in love and finding a new best friend over and over again. Her characters will find a place inside your heart too.
