Excerpt from Marked by Obsession:
Nicholas ignored Wolf and locked his hand around my wrist, pulling me with him as he backed out of the cab’s wreckage.
I couldn’t stifle my gasps and whimpers as I finally managed to turn on the seat until my back was to Wolf. Nicholas shifted his hold to my waist and pulled me to my feet. Once upright, I was left to hold on to him as I fought for balance. The world dipped and swayed, making my stomach pitch and roll in tandem. A cold sweat broke out over my forehead, mixing with the soft rain.
“I don’t feel so good,” I mumbled, hunched over his arm.
“Considering the truck rolled twice, I’m not surprised.” He began to lead me away. Part of me dared to hope he’d leave Wolf alone. He led me around the crumpled hood and toward the second man, who stood there watching, the brim of his baseball cap peeking out from under the hoodie, casting his face in shadow.
When we were a few feet away Nicholas stopped. “Let me have your keys. I want to get her out of the rain.”
Hoodie Man’s head swiveled between us and the truck. “What about the dude?”
“That’s your job.” Nicholas held out a hand. “Keys?”
“Shit, man, that’s not what I signed up for.” His shoulders hunched, and he turned and sent a wad of spit off to his right. “Cost you extra.”
The arm around my waist went rock hard and I braced. Disagreeing with Nicholas never ended well. The complete lack of emotion in his voice set off a series of tremors, which left my teeth chattering.
“You want your paycheck, you clean up. Keys.” The last word was bit out.
Hoodie Man pulled the keys from his front pocket and sent them flying through the air.
Nicholas caught them. “You have three minutes.”
He spun on his heel, forcing me to move with him as he set off.
Panic crawled through me. I couldn’t let him kill Wolf, but I had no idea how to stop them. “Nic, wait!” My voice was rough, and there was no hiding the frantic edge.
I pulled against his hold, stumbling.
He jerked my arm, pain radiating up my shoulder and through my neck at the brutal move. “Don’t start, Meli.”
Twisting, I tried to see where Hoodie Man was, as I fought to get away from Nicholas. “You can’t kill him!”
He stopped, turned, grabbed my upper arms, and shook me. My head whipped back and forth so hard black dots erupted along the edge of my vision, and my legs threatened to collapse.
Then he leaned in until his face was all I could see. “I’m not the one who brought him into this. You are.”
Off-balance and desperate, I pushed, “Brought him into what?”
He jerked back, letting go of my arms, and before I could brace, he backhanded me.
The impact sent me sprawling on the muddy ground, my hip and shoulder taking the brunt of the fall even as I tried to break it with my hands. Gravel tore into my palms, even as my face burned and my ears rang. I barely got a breath before he crouched next to me, wrapped his hand in my hair and yanked up, pulling me upright.
Torn between anger and fear, I scratched at his hands, desperate to get loose. “Let go!”
A vicious tug yanked my head back, forcing me to stare into his face. “Who is he to you?”
“A friend,” I choked out. I knew this game. My answer didn’t matter, but I wasn’t sure I could play along.
He shoved my head forward and I barely managed to stop myself from slamming forehead first into the ground. He straightened, hands on his hips and turned back to Hoodie Man. “Hurry the hell up.”
Taking advantage of his inattention, I scrambled on all fours, getting to my feet to run. “WOLF!” I screamed his name, praying he would wake up.
I managed to get to my feet even as the world stretched, time slowing.
Hoodie Man continued to walk toward the truck, a gun now visible in his hand. As he rounded the passenger side door, his arm rose, gun in hand.
My heart stopped and I screamed again, “WOL—”
Nicholas’s arm hand wrapped around my mouth, cutting my warning off.
Beyond fear and fighting the sickening dread clawing its way through me, leaving massive wounds in its wake, I clawed and bit at his hand. Not Wolf, please not Wolf. Don’t let me lose him too.
Behind me, Nicholas’s violent curse meant nothing.
The rough shove that sent me stumbling forward was unexpected, but I didn’t waste it. Chest heaving, I managed to get my feet under me and was picking up speed, mouth open to warn Wolf again, when a gunshot cracked through the air, quickly followed by two more.
My world shattered on a ragged scream.
