Talk about being ghosted.
In the sleepy town of Pinedale, North Carolina, seventeen-year-old Nate Collier, a self-proclaimed rebel, is accused of hanging his best friend. His alibi is Fiona, a ghost who haunts his school, and ravens who rescue him from an evil ghost awakened from his tomb. The authorities are convinced the murderer is flesh and blood. But nothing is as it seems. The ghost he thought was his friend turns against him and he realizes his attraction toward someone he believed was just a friend. But before he can tell Ruth Ann how he feels, he must join forces with past school enemies to defeat the evil ghost before it takes possession of its next victim—who could even be Nate himself.
Excerpt:
Heart pounding, Nate sat back on his haunches. He’d heard a woman’s voice. Had there been a witness to Aaron’s murder?
“Is someone out there? Don’t be afraid. I just want 11 to talk to you.”
A man in a plain black ski mask tackled Nate and drove him to the rock-strewn ground, pinning him with his knee and shoving his hands down on Nate’s shoulders. The man smelled of garlic, stale beer, and sweat, and he outweighed him by a good fifty pounds.
Jagged rocks dug into his back. Nate struggled to twist free but felt as though he was pinned like a bug under glass. Had the man surprised Aaron in the same way? His friend would not have stood a chance. The attack would have come as a surprise. Aaron wasn’t a street fighter and took personal safety for granted. Aaron had been aware of Nate’s struggles, but Nate wasn’t sure if Aaron had internalized them much beyond that. Aaron would have been alone and afraid. And instead of being there for his friend, Nate had been sulking, deliberately taking his time meeting Aaron.
His friend’s death was on his hands. Anger fueled his temper. The argument had been his fault. Unlike Aaron, Nate was fully capable of fighting back.
Nate reared up and cracked his forehead against the man’s head. Blood gushed from the man’s wound, splattering over Nate. The man roared in pain, loosening his grip. Nate palmed a rock as he rolled to the side and stood.
“That’s for Aaron, you piece of shit. Get the hell away from me.”
The man growled and dove for Nate again, wrapping his arms around Nate’s waist to bring him down. He pressed a blade against Nate’s neck, his eyes as black and cold as the water at Raven Lake. “Don’t try that again. Hold still or I’ll gut you like a fish.”
Cold steel sliced into Nate’s flesh.
