5+ stars for Rescuing His Second Chance by Rhonda Lee Carver #westernromance #bookreview #ku

Title: Rescuing His Second Chance (Cowboys of Second Chances Security Book 5)

Author: Rhonda Lee Carver

Genre: Contemporary Western Romance

Book Blurb:

For Sale: A charming second-hand bookstore located in a remote, picturesque town with a sprawling backdrop of mountains, towering pines, and the rolling waters of Wildflower River in your backyard. A rustic cabin is included.

Hazel Craft needed change, so when she spotted the ad for the bookstore, she knew it had to be a sign from her late husband. Second Chance would be the perfect place to start fresh and ease the lingering heartache of tragedy. When they arrived, her teen daughter wasted no time complaining about the dilapidated cabin and bookstore. Hazel had to admit, things weren’t what she expected either. What was meant as an escape turned out to be a mistake—or was she about to find a hidden gem?

Enjoying his new position as game warden, Dean Ryder felt like things were finally on track after the bomb explosion almost took his life a year ago. When mountain animals start mysteriously dying, he must find the culprit before more animals die. The last thing he needed on his full plate was a widow and her cantankerous teen, but Dean owed his buddy a favor—even if that meant taking care of his family.

My Review:

All Hazel wanted was a second chance at life but she’ll need to open her heart to Dean to make it a home for her and her teen daughter. Rhonda Lee Carver is back for a new installment in this series and it’s such an emotional read. The circumstances, the characters, the emotional narration all make for a western romance I won’t soon forget.

Let’s start with the characters. These characters are real, so realistic I instantly connected with them. Dean is a multi-layered man with a big heart. He’s also morally sound and fights for what’s right. Hazel is a widow with a teen daughter named Andi. Hazel has had to be strong after the death of her husband. This strength and fortitude to make the best of a situation endeared me to her. I also love her snarky streak. She’s a feisty woman who deserves love. Andi is your typical moody teenager who hates everything. She’s well-written and realistic.

The world-building and narration work well together and propel the plot. I enjoyed learning about what is involved in being a game warden. The narration is detailed and emotional. Swirling emotional tension had me whipping through the pages.

The romance between Dean and Hazel is brilliantly written and executed without any flaws. It’s slow-burn yet has a natural feel. Hazel needs to let her husband go before she can open her heart to Dean. As they fall in love, so did I. A truly immersive reading experience.

Author Biography:

Rhonda Lee Carver is a bestselling author of contemporary western and romantic suspense, but she loves to write other genres too. She's known for writing stories that keep readers laughing, crying, gripping the edge of their seats, and screaming all in one book...like riding a virtual roller coaster. Whether she's creating sexy cowboys or tough guys, or sassy, independent heroines, readers are sure to find strong, powerful, memorable characters that are relatable.

By day, she taps into her creative, fictional world but at some point she transitions back into reality where she's a volleyball-stands cheerleader, homework virtuoso (at least she thinks so), amateur nurse to skinned knees, mediocre chef with some awesome microwave skills, pet-guru (all the strays show up at her house), and a Jackie of all trades for her kids who are the loves of her life. Yoga and chocolate keep her sane. Hallmark movies require cuddling up with tissues because she can be emotional. She adds a sprinkle of her own real-life adventures in each story she spins because a little truth never hurt anyone. She wouldn't give up one thing in her crazy, chaotic, ever-amusing life, except, she might do magic tricks for the bungalow on the beach she's had her eye on (GOALS).

Writing for Rhonda is like falling in love and finding a new best friend over and over again. Her characters will find a place inside your heart too.
