Excerpt:

The heavy heat pressed against my chest.

In an effort to focus on anything other than the layer of sweat accumulating over my entire body, I dug my hands into the beautiful white sand at my side. I tried to remain motionless, even as the chatter picked up around me.

A shadow crossed over me, blocking out the afternoon sun. “I heard you slept on someone’s porch on Island Two the other night,” Julian said.

I knew there was a smirk on his face before I even opened my eyes.

“Go away,” I groaned.

“Isn’t that why Sebastian gave you a walkie?”

The grains of sand further mixed with my hair when I stretched my body out, and I sighed. I tapped my palm against his foot, remaining coy and refusing to admit that I couldn’t figure out the buttons.

“You’re blocking the light, Julian. Move.”

I picked this spot near the medical tent in Fernandina’s camp setup because it was secluded enough for people to keep their distance but close enough that someone could collect me when the Council votes were finalized. It was supposed to happen three days ago, after the voting took place, but the process of vetting and counting all the votes took far longer than we anticipated.

Julian dropped down next to me with ease, resting back against his palms.

“Is this a new habit for you?”

“Laying on the ground?”

“Staying still.” He paused. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this immobile before, even in your sleep.”

I considered it. “It has recently come to my attention that my time indoors has made me even more noticeably pale.”

“Since when do you give a shit about that kind of stuff?” Julian wondered aloud.

Since Everett, I realized.
