Excerpt:
Four tiring days later, they crested the latest peak and started downhill. Thankful for that small measure, Gabe swiped a hand across his forehead, wiping a sheen of sweat from his brow. It’d been a grueling trek and carrying the damn pack hadn’t made it any easier. The downhill slide was definitely preferable to the steep terrain they’d just scaled. They’d followed the edge of a high gorge split in two by a raging river at its base and at times the trail was so narrow, there was barely enough room to put one foot in front of the other. It hadn’t helped that a battering wind fed by the updrafts from the gorge made footing that much harder. He’d kept his balance by grabbing onto handfuls of brush that hung from the high side of the trail, determined not to look down.
Just thinking about it caused his gut to wrench. Heights were never his favorite and the game trail they were following meandered too damn close to some major drop-offs for his comfort. Only mountain goats would like that terrain. He’d felt like they were on top of the world but even so, there were peaks in the distance which towered over the landscape, slumbering giants untouched by the chaos so prevalent in the lower regions.
“Need some help?” Saff’s voice broke into his reverie.
“You offering or just making conversation?”
She chuckled, a low and husky sound of mirth. “Maybe both,” she admitted. “But I could take some of the weight off of you. Wolf’s shovel and hammer for a start.”
“Appreciate the offer.” He nodded in Cap’s and Wolf’s direction. “But I’m trying to make myself seem indispensable to those who might think otherwise.” He grinned. “Besides. I’m a gentleman and no gentleman would ever let a lady carry the weight.”
Her full lips curved in a half-smile “In case you haven’t noticed, I’m not a lady.” The wide eyes were full of meaning—meanings he was eager to explore.
“I hadn’t noticed but I’ll be sure to keep that in mind.”
“You two just going to stand there jawing?” Cap motioned them to follow. “We got people waiting. Should’ve been there already.”
Gabe adjusted the heavy pack, easing the strain on his shoulders. “How many will be at this rendezvous?”
“More than you’d expect,” was Cap’s caustic reply. “You’ll meet them when we get there.”
Saff’s slanted eyes sparkled with unconcealed humor. “He won’t tell you anything else until he’s good and ready…and until he’s totally sure about you.”
“That could be never,” he grumbled but his bad mood lightened several degrees as he followed Saff down the trail.
Watching her slim hips sway from side to side with each step made carrying the damn pack almost bearable. For such a slip of a thing, she was amazingly graceful. Like a dancer; not the skilled killer he knew her to be.
