Title: Another Chance
Author: Michael Roberts
Genre: Alternative American History Time Travel
Book Blurb:
When we lost the American Rebellion against the British in the 1700s, the world for the colonists changed for the worst.
After centuries of suffering under the oppressive thumb of the English crown, a wealthy American entrepreneur in the 21st century finds an alien craft that can travel through time.
That man is my best friend. And he figured out how to use that alien tech with one goal in mind: to go back in time and use our modern technology and knowledge to help the American Colonists defeat the English, with their Revolutionary War, and change the course of history for the better.
And why does he ask me, a lowly, disgraced, former police officer, to be the one to make this precarious journey and try to change history?
Because after a British official murdered my wife and got away with it, I have nothing left to lose.
This way, even if I don't make it back, the course of time will have changed and maybe, just maybe, in the new future I can help shape, America might be a free country and the woman who would have been my wife would be alive.
Those two aspirations are worth fighting for.
I only hope I can achieve the impossible and change America's future by going into the past.
Excerpt:
I stood up and then stumbled back down. My vest had worked as advertised and stopped the bullet that should have killed me. I wasn’t sure if I had any broken ribs or not but damn, it hurt. I struggled to breathe, but I was catching my breath, so I didn’t think I punctured a lung. My left leg began to burn. My pants were ripped, and my leg was bleeding. When I had dived to the side, one of the rounds hit the back of my thigh. It didn’t seem to be bleeding too badly, so it could wait.
I reloaded the Contender and picked up my Tec-9, ejecting the magazine and replacing it with a loaded one from my man purse. I had to remember that I only had six shots this time, not seven. I then limped over to where General Washington sat tied up. Men yelled outside – whether Brits or militia, I couldn’t guess. I slipped the blind fold off his eyes, and he blinked several times as his left eye adapted to the lamp light in the room. His right eye was swollen shut and a mess of red and purple. He also had a knot on the back of his head, with dried blood caked around it. I pulled the rag out of his mouth, and he worked his jaw as he viewed the carnage.
“Are you Ok, General?” I asked.
“Fine, I think,” he said, then asked more than stated, “thanks to you?”
“Yes, sir,” I answered. “I got lucky with the element of surprise.”
Men rushed into the tavern as I cut Washington’s hands free. He held up his right hand before someone misread the situation and shot me.
He glanced over to the other side of the room, where two dead men laid.
“Your advisors?” I asked.
“Yes,” he said. “The bastards came in and charged us. How did you know that I’d been captured?”
“In truth sir, I didn’t,” I answered honestly. “Not until I noticed their boots.”
“Their boots you say?” he asked.
He stood up shakily and staggered over to the first two soldiers, observing their boots.
“Newer, finely made, English boots,” he said. “Well polished but muddy.”
He nodded his head in some silent agreement with himself. With the toe of his boot, he rolled the head of one soldier, exposing the wound under his chin. He shifted his gaze to the other soldier who had since died.
He altered his gaze over at me, his eyes hooded and powerful. Commanding. “Very observant of you, young man. Who are you, sir?”
“Thomas, sir, at your service,” I answered.
