WHY YOU CAN’T (AND SHOULDN’T) SELL TO EVERYONE
To begin with we can’t be successful if we try to sell to everyone because
our time and resources are limited. By identifying who our ideal buyers
are, we can be intentional about how we invest our time and money, allowing
us more time to focus on those who will buy from us (because they have
a need for what we offer), and less time with those who won’t.
Let’s look at some examples of companies that recognize (and capitalize on) selling to their ideal buyers, and the influence this has on their sales and growth.
In 2019, Tesla made the decision to shift to closing its retail stores (save
for some stores in high traffic regions) and moving all of the sales for their
cars online. They did so because they recognized their ideal buyer was
someone who was willing to purchase an electric car online.
At the time, buyers of Tesla’s were early adopters of technology and
recognized the brand power of Tesla. They drive a Tesla not necessarily
because they want to drive an electric car (there are other electric vehicle
options they could invest in), but because they want to drive a Tesla.
Knowing this, Tesla recognized that using a retail sales strategy (selling
cars in-store, which has historically been how most new cars have been
sold) for distribution of their cars was an expense they didn’t need to bear.
Additionally, Tesla knew that moving to an entirely online buying experience
would reduce some of the costs associated with a retail sales strategy,
ultimately helping them to reduce the selling price of their cars, which also
appeals to their ideal buyer.
