Title: Sound of a Wylder Silence
Author: Marilyn Barr
Genre: PNR, historical western romance
Book Blurb:
Ikshu Sagebrush lives in the shadows of his mystical brother, loudmouth sister-in-law, and the trauma he endured. When a chance meeting with a Christmas angel makes him consider stepping into the light, Ikshu calls to the spirits of his ancestors to help restore his voice.
Ava Wylder is no angel, but her wicked ways are the catalyst Ikshu needs to face his inner demons and build a life. She would gladly trade her family’s wish for her to become a lady of a manor house in New York for the natural beauty of Wylder and a simple existence with Ikshu.
When their families and community status step between them, she cannot fight for their love alone.
Will Ikshu find his voice to make his intentions known, or let true love slip through his fingers?
My Review:
She craves his silence and tenderness but will he stand up for her when she needs him the most? Ava returns home from New York, hoping to convince her father and brothers she belongs in Wylder. She is not cut out to be married to a fop in the big city. She craves the outdoors, adventure, and silence. At a Christmas party, she meets Ikshu and is drawn to him. He’s not boastful or loud but says everything she needs to know with his soulful eyes. She starts receiving little gifts which she knows are handcrafted by him. When he discovers who her family is, he backs away. Ava knows she cares deeply for him and must be more aggressive in order to win his heart. Everything is going according to her plan until her family objects to the match. She’s being forced to leave against her will. Can Ikshu step forward and claim her as his own or will they forever be apart?
Sound of a Wylder Silence is a stunning historical western romance from start to finish. It’s not often I read a book so compelling, it wrecks me. This book wrung out my heart with its emotional narration and conflict. Add in the lush descriptive narration and this is one of the finest books I’ve ever read. I connected with Ava right away. Her aversion to noise, crowds, and such really resonated with me. I could also relate to her family’s expectations of her. Ikshu’s traumatic experiences broke my heart. Seeing everyday life through the eyes of a Native American added an incredible depth to the story. Marilyn Barr took great care in representing the culture and traditions of Ikshu’s tribe. The world-building was intricate and exceptional. Sound of a Wylder Silence is more than a romance, it is about finding your place in the world and standing up for what you want. It’s also about love, many forms of love. These themes are woven throughout Sound of a Wylder Silence and make this a riveting historical western romance. I can’t recommend this book enough.
My Rating: 5++ stars
