Excerpt:

“Wouldst fair lady desire a dance with me?”

Cat laughed. “Yes, I would love to.” She winked at Polly as she sailed onto the floor.

He smiled. “May I introduce myself?”

With a teasing poke, she said, “You don’t have to.” His expression was wicked.

At the end of the number, Jake squeezed her hand. “Let’s go where we can talk.”

Cat noticed her father had joined the others. “We can go outside for a moment.” They slipped out the door on the other side of the ballroom and into a small vestibule.

Jake removed his hat and looked contrite. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about the story I was working on. I should have done so when my feelings for you changed.”

She sighed. “I guess I was really hurt by that, but I do accept your apology. I owe you one as well.” He puckered his forehead. “I thought you had taken up with someone else.”

“What made you think that?”

“I saw you with another girl twice. But then I found out it was your sister.”

He laughed. “So that was why you were so angry with me. That was Peggy. She got back a couple of weeks ago from San Francisco. I’m here with her tonight.” His face grew tender. “I really missed you, Cat.” His arms went around her, and as he kissed her Cat marveled at the heat they generated in their thin costumes. Her chest and belly tightened. She could hardly catch her breath.
