Excerpt:

When I woke, the bed was empty beside me. I sat up and my eyes immediately went to the window. The curtains were pulled back and Skip stood in front of the glass like a statue.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Something’s not right,” he mumbled. “Something is out of place.”

Fear sent my heart racing as I climbed from the bed. “What is it?”

I stopped next to him in front of the window. Outside, bright yellow lights illuminated the parking lot to either side of us. Looking down, there were neat rows of cars with ours parked all the way to my right. Beyond the parking lot, the street had emptied and seemed to be asleep itself. “I don’t see anything.”

“There’s a car.”

“I see lots of cars.”

“A gold car.”

“Yeah,” I said, “three of them at least.”

Skip pushed the curtain aside and pulled me closer to the glass. “The gold car with the man inside. He’s watching the hotel.”

“How do you know?”

“Who sits outside of a hotel at two a.m.? Shouldn’t he be sleeping?”

I yawned. “Someone with nothing better to do.”

“That man isn’t supposed to be here. I noticed him earlier tonight while you took a shower. It looks like he’s reading a paper, but he’s doing some kind of surveillance.”

“How can you tell?”

“I’ve seen this in movies. He’s got a camera and he’s taking pictures of the hotel.”

I rolled my eyes. “I’m going back to bed.” Before I could turn around, an eerie feeling came over me, the same feeling I’d had when I imagined the guy watching me in the woods behind Ricky’s trailer. Pressing my nose to the cold glass, I scanned the parking lot. To my left, standing between two trees near the hotel’s sign stood a dark figure.

“Skip,” I whispered, “do you see that man?”

“What man?”

I pointed to the trees and my breath caught. The man’s eyes were glowing. It was the same shade of violet from the woods. From outside, I heard dogs barking, cats meowing; it was like animals were screaming in pain. He was watching me. Me. His lips formed one word…

Angel.

“I don’t see anyone. Angel, you’re shaking.” He grabbed my arm and I turned to see the worry in Skip’s eyes.

“You can’t see him?” I asked. “Between the trees next to the sign. Please tell me you heard the animals.”

“I haven’t heard anything. I see the cars and the trees, but no man.” He gave an angry laugh. “You’re messing with me, aren’t you?”

Shaking my head, I looked back at the trees. The man had disappeared, along with my feeling of being watched.

“Let’s go back to bed.”

Was I going crazy? Had I really seen the same man with glowing eyes?

Skip pulled the curtains closed and led me back to the bed. “That was mean, even for you. It wasn’t funny.”

“Skip, there really was a man out there. It was the same guy I saw in the woods.”

The anger faded and his face twisted with concern. “You think someone is following us?”

“I don’t know, but I had the feeling he was watching me.” And he’d said my name. Either I was going crazy or this guy knew me.

“Like the feeling I had about the man in the gold car. He’s not supposed to be there. I think he’s watching someone.”

My whole body shook as I climbed back under the blanket. “Us?”

Author Biography:

C.C. Bolick grew up in south Alabama, where she’s happy to still reside. She’s an engineer by day and a writer by night—too bad she could never do one without the other.

Camping, fishing… she loves the outdoors and the warm Alabama weather. For years she thought up stories to write and finally started putting them on paperback in 2006. If you hear her talking with no one to answer, don’t think she’s crazy. Since talking through her stories works best, a library is her worst place to write… even though it’s her favorite!

C.C. loves to mix sci-fi and paranormal—throw in a little romance and adventure and you’ve got her kind of story. She’s written a dozen books including the Leftover Girl series, The Agency series, and The Fear Chronicles.
