Compassion has its price.
The former archangel Gabriel’s quiet, human life is shattered when his brother Michael delivers a dire warning. An ancient evil he spared has reawakened and is collecting archangels in order to bend mankind to her will. Raphael has already gone missing, but Michael knows her real target is Gabriel, who she’s sworn to take revenge on. He orders his brother to stay hidden, but when Michael is the next to disappear, Gabriel, as per usual, disobeys him. His lover Evie, friend Abby Campbell, the Keeper of a holy Book of Knowledge, and her boyfriend Ryan Moss do whatever it takes to rescue the missing angels.
Their attempt, however, fails when they discover the demon isn’t killing them, but posing the helpless angels in macabre displays. With Gabriel severely wounded from their thwarted mission, they have no choice but to call on bigger guns to help–his dysfunctional celestial siblings, the archangels. As the humans race to find a way to contain her growing army of followers, Gabriel and his youngest brother, Lucifer, have to put aside family differences and team up to end the demon or risk being pinned up in her twisted stained glass display. And even if they succeed, will it be enough to save Gabriel’s life?
Excerpt
“You drive a convertible Tesla Roadster?” Gabriel stood there, mouth agape, as Lucifer slid into the sleek car. He didn’t even know the car was available as a convertible.
“Just because I’m the Prince of Darkness doesn’t mean I hate the planet. What were you expecting? A big flashy Hummer with flames on the side?”
“Right, because you avoided all the tropes by getting a black car with a red interior.”
“I had it custom-made,” he beamed. “Tesla only comes in vegan leather, whatever the hell that is.”
In truth, he didn’t know what to expect. His youngest sibling had been full of surprises since he arrived at the Inn with Evie two days ago. Shrugging it off, he got in, but before he could reach for the seatbelt, his sibling stomped on the accelerator and backed out of his parking spot at close to Mach ten, childishly throwing Gabriel into the dashboard. Now that was more like his brother.
The car rocketed forward with more tire squeals as he continued. “I don’t even hate people, despite what all the propaganda says. If you think about it, I’m working for Father in my own way, tempting souls and weeding out the ones who shouldn’t be allowed to knock on those pearly gates Peter’s so proud of. I’m like one of those ‘no solicitors’ signs, keeping out the riffraff.”
Once they got to the highway, he let go of the wheel and turned his attention to Gabriel, a wicked smile slashing across his face. “You trust information coming from a woman who made you wear a kilt? Nice legs, by the way.”
“What are you doing?” He reached over in a panic to grab at the steering wheel.
Shocked, the larger man easily blocked him. “What the hell is wrong with—oh,” he laughed in sudden realization, “it’s a self-driving car, you Luddite.”
Sitting back in relief, he swore under his breath. He removed the garnet out of his pocket and joked, “Congrats. According to this, you just shaved half an hour off my life.”
They both chuckled at his lame joke, but the sound faded away, leaving them driving in silence. He didn’t even want to guess at his brother’s thoughts, so when he spoke, Lucifer surprised him yet again.
“Remember when Father took us to see the first sunrise on Earth?”
The corners of his lips curled, knowing exactly what Luci was talking about. “You were too small and complained you couldn’t see anything, so Michael lifted you onto his shoulders.”
“Uriel freaked out about the world being lit on fire and started crying, so you had to hold his hand.” They laughed again, only this time it was genuine, filled with warmth instead of cold irony. Lucifer smiled. “That was when Father explained to me why my name was different from all of yours, that I was his light bearer, the bringer of dawn.”
Gabriel looked at his brother with new appreciation. “His morning star. I remember that now.” He hesitated, uncertain if this was the right time to mention it, and then just dove in. “Father paid me a visit the other night,”
The news snapped Lucifer out of the happy memory. “What? Where, at the Inn?”
Nodding, he told him the rest of the story. “It was a weird visit. He knew I was dying and talked about needing to combine science and faith to heal me because there was nothing He could do.”
“That is so like Dad,” his brother remarked bitterly. Gabriel thought he was angry about Father not curing him until he continued. “I was one lousy floor up, but did He stop by? No. Light bearer my ass—you know, later on, He referred to Jesus the same way? He must have run out of names after the seven of you.”
Gabriel shook his head, desperate to make his brother understand. “That’s not true. He talked about you, about how glad he was we were on speaking terms again. At least,” he hesitated, overwhelmed with despair, “I think it was Him, but when I turned around, there was just the black and white cat there. So maybe He didn’t diss you, Luci. Could be I’m going crazy.”
His story was met with such uncharacteristic silence he glanced over to make sure his brother was still awake. Lucifer avoided his glance as he put the car back into manual and exited the highway. Finally, he shook his head. “Let’s face it, driving you nuts wouldn’t be a long trip, but I don’t think you imagined it. Popping in for a quick, albeit mysterious, visit and then disappearing so you doubt your sanity? Page one in His almighty playbook. And…we’re here.”
Lucifer pointed to a house. Stunned, he checked the address he’d written, and sure enough, they matched. Morganna’s master of black magic lived in a house taken right out of the pages of “Hansel and Gretel” including a pointed, lopsided shingle roof, tiny windows framed with crooked wooden shutters, and a moat. All that was missing were the edible building materials.
“You’ve got to be bloody kidding me.”
Getting out of the car with a sigh, his little brother commented. “Come along, my pretty.”
He didn’t bother correcting that he was mixing up his witches.
