Excerpt:
Distraught about this new information, Chloe paced the small dining area and folded her arms. “I’m at a loss for words. It sounds like Jake was in shock."
“I’m sorry, was I too blunt?” Harriet picked up the coffee pot.
“Of course not. I’m thankful you’re taking the time to tell me all this.” Chloe sat down again. “I’ve been waiting a long time to hear the correct facts. I’m one out of a million who thinks Jake lived.”
Harriet moved closer with the coffee pot. “Here, let me fill your cup.” She filled Chloe’s mug then poured herself some. “After Brent jumped into the car, we decided to go back and persuade him to get in, too. At the very least, we could’ve driven him home.”
Reality of the truth engulfed Chloe. “Hearing this is mind boggling.”
“By the time we turned the car around and drove back, he had disappeared. I pulled the car over. Brent got out and looked for him. He went down several driveways and side roads.”
“This is unbelievable!” Chloe’s heart raced.
“We searched for him for over an hour. I didn’t sleep that night from worrying.”
She brushed her hand against Harriet’s arm. “Thank you for trying to locate him.” She was puzzled beyond measure. “I wonder why he didn’t want your help. He knew he was hurt.”
“My husband thought… well, I’m too embarrassed to say.”
She rolled her eyes. “It’s okay. You won’t believe all the things I’ve heard people say.”
“Brent said he left the scene because he was either drunk or in trouble with the law.”
“He didn’t drink, well, not to my knowledge. I don’t think he’d been in trouble with the authorities. But since you’ve said this, I’d hate to even think…” Lord, help me. She pressed her lips into a tight line. The less she said, the better. Why add to a rumor mill?
“Are you okay?” Harriet stepped towards her.
