Title: The Extended Summer of Anna and Jeremy
Author: Jennifer Ann Shore
Genre: Young Adult, Romance
Book Blurb:
Is one summer enough time to change everything?
Anna Wright is always on her best behavior — turning in homework assignments early, keeping her head down during disagreements, and living life vicariously through action movies.
Faced with the reality of her reputation as a lame, high school cliché, she decides now is the time for a change, so when hotshot basketball player Jeremy Blake interrupts her late-night plotting over a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, she convinces him to help.
As they explore the summer together, Anna can’t help but wonder what else will fall into place as autumn approaches.
Excerpt:
I reached for the cereal box, wishing I was reaching for Jeremy instead, and tore it open.
“So you know how for a while, Trix have just been colorful round circles?”
“I don’t, but continue,” he said, feeding a handful of popcorn into his mouth.
“Well, they were like Kix, but General Mills just brought back the fruit shapes.” I pulled open the plastic bag, picking out some of the lemon shapes to toss back. “I swear it makes them taste better.”
“Fruit shapes, huh?”
He grabbed a handful, examining them closely, and I pointed to the little blue flower with a pink dot in the middle on his open palm. “This one is my favorite. They call it ‘wildberry blue,’ for some reason.”
“That’s not even a fruit.”
“Valid point,” I conceded. “I still love them.”
“Are there even blue flowers in the world? Or do they just dye flowers blue and pink with artificial coloring?”
I scolded him. “Stop trying to ruin my Trix experience for me. I picked up this box specifically for nostalgia, not to have you be so judgmental.”
Jeremy settled into the massive pile of pillows, feet dangling off the edge of the bed, as the second Keanu movie of the day began.
He remained unbothered as the garage door opened and closed, followed by heavy footsteps clunking up the two floors. I sat up in an unnatural position as Cory barged into the room, eyeing us suspiciously.
“What’s going on?”
The accusation in his tone reverberated in my skull, and my blood pressure skyrocketed. I couldn’t come up with one single thing to say.
“I came over here, looking for you,” Jeremy said, as nonchalantly as only he could pull off. “Anna thought it’d be fun to induct me into her action movie cult.”
He poured Trix straight from the box to his mouth, not spilling a single one, and I stared at him incredulously.
Cory sat down beside me, and I grabbed my pillow before he could get too comfortable on it.
“Oh, is this the one with Patrick Swayze?” His hand was already digging in on the container of trail mix. “Ha, and Gary Busey.”
Jeremy nodded, eyes glued to the screen. “And the guy who played Dr. Cox on ‘Scrubs.’”
“Don’t you two have plans elsewhere?” I asked, watching Cory miss his mouth and get some of the coveted peanut butter chips on my white bedspread.
They both shrugged, and I tried my best to get lost in the film, finding difficulty with the two of them taking up so much space.
This wasn’t my favorite movie. It didn’t even really rank in the top twenty, but when Jeremy inconspicuously slid his hand into mine under the layers of pillows, I hoped it would never end.
