Adelaida Machado loved two things. Creating unimaginable chocolate creations to tempt the senses and walking the beach along her family's villa. The first sustained her during the French Invasion. The second brought her Grayson Conrad. She could've done without either. Grayson Conrad agreed to deliver food and medical supplies to a Portuguese contact in exchange for French troop movements. Running a blockade? Easy. He hadn't counted on the storm that destroyed his ship or the beautiful widow who rescued him from the rocky shoreline. Sparks fly, and not just when she discovers he's English and a risk to everyone she loves. He gives her the only hope they have that perhaps the French can be overthrown and she'll do everything in her power to help him. Even at the risk to her own heart. But when a traitor in her village brings down the wrath of the French army, Adelaida has two choices--give up Grayson or sacrifice everything she holds dear.

Excerpt

“You’re mad.”

“In here? With nothing to read? No one to talk to except you for only several moments every day?” Grayson nodded, the loneliness and isolation of the last ten days tumbling out. “Yes. Yes, I am.”

“I’m sorry.” She took his hand, her fingers stroking his knuckles. “I wish I could stay all day. Or bring Gabriel. I’m sure he’d love wandering the gardens. But I’m afraid to bring him out too much.”

Afraid of the attention she might bring down on him, she meant. Grayson cursed himself and his selfishness. For as trapped as he was in this cottage, she was even more so in the villa. The size of the house didn’t matter.

The only difference was, he could leave. Thank her for her hospitality, leave her the herbs he’d brought for his contact, and disappear before the French knew he’d been here. Grayson paused. He could, but until that moment, he hadn’t thought to do so. In fact, thinking on it now, he immediately dismissed the idea.

No, he wouldn’t leave Adelaida until he could guarantee her safety. One way or another.

“One step at a time,” Grayson said aloud. “My mother says that. We can’t take our second step without completing the first.”

“Wise woman, your mother.”

“You two have a lot in common.” He chuckled and brushed his fingertips over her cheek. They were as soft as he remembered, and the feel of her skin rushed through him. “Except I want to kiss you.”
