Excerpt

Bill Hastings stopped working on the wooden miner’s lift. The whispers drifting up through the mining shaft ceased. All he heard now was the dripping of water. Starling Mine always ran with water. In some places, droplets, and in other areas, it ran in rivulets down the walls leaving discoloration from the minerals.

Screecky. Screeky. Screeky.

He’d picked up the hammer but nearly dropped it down the shaft when a shadowy figure entered his peripheral vision. Breath caught in his chest. Rumbling and muttering whispers started again. A blast of cold air rumpled his thinning hair.

Easing to his feet, he then slowly turned toward the ethereal figure. The feathery image of a miner straddled an old bike looking right at him.

Echoes of dynamite blasts came from way below. How could that be? All the lower tunnels were flooded.

Keeping his wits was a struggle, but he’d spent a great deal of his adulthood as an amateur ghost hunter. “What do you want?”

The spectral figure placed a foot on a pedal and pushed off with the ghostly bicycle. It looked over his shoulder at Bill. “He’s coming.”

A shiver ran up Bill’s spine, and sweat broke out on his forehead even though the temperature stayed at around fifty-six degrees. “Who?”

But the miner from long ago didn’t answer. He simply pedaled down the drilled corridor and faded away.

The whispers grew louder, and the non-working lift he’d been fixing creaked. Whatever was coming up, he didn’t need to wait for it.

“Feet, don’t fail me now.” He took off running. Bursting through the mine door, he noticed the bike that always stood in honor of Bicycle Pete’s disappearance was gone.
