Excerpt:
I’d driven by the house since I’d been up here and was a little disappointed the exterior needed some work. But in preparation for the tour, the owners had restained the wood siding, and they filled the property with fall flowers. I led everyone down to the lake and showed them the dock where our boat had moored, and where we’d sit dangling our feet in the water. I told them about my mother’s first experience driving the boat; how she’d started out so hesitantly, then realized the power within, and drove like a madwoman!
I found the spot where my father had hung a swing from the largest tree branch; even back then, we were really too old for it, but when I started to say something to my mother, she put her finger to her lips to silence me. After it was up, I changed my mind, for even as a ten-year-old, I felt so free as I swung as high as I could, trying to imagine reaching the top of the trees.
“I used to run through the woods, sometimes ankle deep in show. Remember when you came up, Sarah? We’d throw snowballs at each other and one of us would always get snow pushed down their back, especially if Loni came up with a girlfriend.” I didn’t give her a chance to answer. “And I remember seeing my first deer. I stood still as she lifted her head to see what I was going to do. She sensed I meant her no harm, and she slowly turned and walked away.”
I held my breath just for an instant, and said, “Well, we might as well go inside. I’m dying to see what they’ve done to the place.”

Author Biography:
Chrysteen Braun is a California native, born and raised in Long Beach.
The Lake Arrowhead mountains, where she and her husband had a second home, were the inspiration for her first three books, The Guestbook Trilogy. These fictional restored cabins from the late 1920s all had their own stories to tell. Through their children, readers get their first glimpse of who stayed in the cabins, but not why.
